Vintage (Campy) BB with weird lock nut...

  • Hi.

Am refurb'ing my 70s road bike and was about to attack the BB with the usual tools when I realised this is not the kind of BB i'm used to: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2633837/liberati/bb.jpg

Presumably that thing with the 6 holes is the lock nut? The outer lock ring is your typical c'wrench, but what is the tool I need for the rest?... Or am I looking at it wrong and in fact all I need is the c'wrench.

Basically; how do I get the thing off and back on again? I'm confused.

Should add it's not Campy, but "Campy-like" unbranded replacement (maybe a Gipiemme?)... pretty similar to the Nuovo Record which'd make sense as the rest of the bike has that groupset.

(Apols if this should be in the BB thread)

  • Apparently it's one piece without a lock nut. I was not expecting that... So presumably I just tighten it up once I've replaced the balls? I.e. no fannying around doing the usual locknut-tighness dance?

    See pic here: http://cicloitaliano.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_0978.jpg

  • By the looks of things I need this: http://www.parktool.com/product/crank-and-bottom-bracket-wrench-hcw-4

    Is that right?

  • Yup. Think I've answered my own question there...

  • Looks like you have a standard "adjustable" bottom bracket.

I don't know what you mean by "lock nut".

The non-drive side cup is the adjustable one and you will need to "fanny around" with it before tightening the lock ring.

The tool you linked to does have a "pin spanner" on one end, but it isn't adjustable so you need to check that it will fit your cup. This is an example of the adjustable type.

This page explains things in more detail.

  • Thanks!

Reason why I was confused (apart from never seeing one before) was that in the pictures the lock ring and the 'nut' (none drive side) are always assembled so it looks like they were one thing.

Thanks for finding that adjustable pin spanner; that's far cheaper than the Park Tools one and less risky vis-a-vis fit.

  • Most welcome.

Presumably you're used to cartridge BB?

I tighten the adjustable cup finger tight; fit the lock ring, but don't tighten it up; fit the cranks and try to rock them holding the pedal ends: back off/tighten up the adjustable cup just enough to take out any play when rocking the cranks, then tighten the lock ring.

  • Cartridge, yeah. That process makes sense; similar to a refurb'ing a hub I guess.

  • Exactly.
