I didn't have too much space, both financially and literally, when I won the frame this summer. But I do now, she's currently on my couch but as soon as I have some bike hangers on my wall the real building will commence. The frame came with a headset and bottom bracket, the parts I have now:

    • Frame + Fork
    • Hatta Swan Super Deluxe Headset
    • Hatta R9400 BB
    • Sugino 75 cranks (165 mm) with a 49t Sugino 75 chainring
    • Izumi V Super Toughness chain
    • 186t Dura Ace cog and Dura Ace lockring
    • 110 mm Nitto Jaguar stem with 38cm Nitto B123 bars with black Soyo Grips
    • Nitto SP72 Jaguar Seatpost
    • Five Gold top-tube protector
    • MKS NJS Chain Tugs
    • 36h Dura Ace front hub

So that leaves a pretty short list of things I need:

    • Saddle
    • Wheels
    • Pedals

Saddle will be a Kashima Five Gold saddle, which I should be able to buy locally new, not sure yet, though.

But I'm not too sure about the wheels, because I'm not too sure what I'll be using the bike for. If I'll be solely using it as a track bike, I'll get a wheelset from NJS-export with a Araya Gold and Soyo tubes. But if I'd want to use it for street racing I'd buy a Dura Ace rear hub and lace them to high-polished TB14's with Pasela Tourguards or something similar, gum-wall-wise.

I'm currently buying a "regular" road bike too, and I'll let the pedal choice depend on the pedals I'll buy with it. But I'm sure it will be clipless.

Most of the parts sourced from the lovely guys on forum64! Thanks V-L, Dick, giles337, jimjamosullivan and all the people I've bothered with offers. :)

  • Forum64? A hidden forum for NJS owners only?

  • 18t Dura Ace cog? Please a picture!

Whoops , it's a 16. Didn't remember from the top of my head, and that 6 looks an awful lot like an 8:

  • hehe it does!

  • Finally! GLWB

I'd go with the second option if this was up to me. I'd hate to have a bike that I couldn't take out for a little spin because of skinny and expensive njs tubs. The Dura-Ace to TB14 wheelset would be more than adequate for the track and it'll let you blast it around the streets and country lanes.

It's all well having a full njs bike for the internet points but I don't think it's necessarily worth it. My njs frame is currently rolling as my beater and has very few njs components on it, but it's set up comfortably and rides lovely.

I look forward to seeing the build pictures regardless of your choice.

That's what I needed to hear. TB14's it is.

Last thing I need now are the Sugino 75 dust covers, can they be bought within the EU?

Statics and Dynamics by Hibbeler. They were never on the syllabus when I did my degree. Are you doing a masters?

  • Nope Bachelors, but in Delft.

  • You guys use Engineering Mathematics by Stroud over there?

    What a book 😉

  • Nope, we use Calculus Early Transcendentals and Linear Algebra by Lay's.

    On topic:
First problem arose, chain is too short for 49/16. Just assumed it was a full length chain when I bought it, but apparently not. Not sure if I'll put this on my beater or sell it, probably the latter because it will look like shit on this bike. Ordered another one, a padded Five Gold and a 7600 hubset. So the build will really commence shortly!

And another problem: the seatpost doesn't fit. I have the exact same 27.0 mm Nitto SP72 as you did, Kal. But it's a mad tight fit, and I could just feel the scuffing when putting in the first couple of mm's. I have no lube handy, buy there already was a fair bit in there, will try putting it in with more lube and otherwise buy a cheap 26.8mm seatpost to see if that's a better fit before buying a nice one.

  • Got the pedals sorted, will be Look Keo Carbons. Might change them to NJS toe-clip pedals some day, when I turn this into the real full-on track build I dream of. But for now these will do fine, especially since I just splurged on nice Bont road shoes.

It's waiting for parts to arrive now, hubs, saddle and chain should be in somewhere next week and the rims first week of november probably. Last dilemma for now will be tires, what gumwall clinchers do you recommend? I have gumwall Halo Couriers on my day-to-day bike which are doing fine and I never managed to puncture despite all the glass and shit if put them through, but I suppose this bike calls for something more delicate.

Will move a fair bit of tools and shit this weekend, might get a hold of a bit of grease earlier to try and side that seatpost in. Apartment's getting a bit crowded going from to three bikes at once, but I mostly enjoying running into a pretty bike when I wake up. :)

  • Statics and Dynamics by Hibbeler haunted my first year at Uni.

  • Statics and Dynamics by Hibbeler haunted my first year at Uni.

    Tell me about it.

Everything has arrived, I'll put on the saddle and pedals tomorrow. Hubs are at the LBS, rims should arrive somewhere soon so it will be finished before the end of november. :)

  • Pedals and the new chain are on there, new chain is far too long which is nice because I can make the short chain a proper length too now. Pedals aren't quite correct, I suppose, but I like them.

Saddle arrived too, so I tried my hand at a bike fit calculator and it will turn out something like this. Still need to adjust bar and saddle angle, but height should be somewhat correct. The stem is pretty scuffed, so I might put the NJS pearl I have on my other bike on here, but I'll see about that, might just get a prettier jaguar if I want it longer or shorter after having ridden it. Overall I think it looks pretty well-proportioned, I like bikes showing quite a bit of seatpost.

Last thing is waiting for the wheels, which he says will take some time because I want a 4-cross pattern

  • Wheels will be finished next weekend, last decision will be tires. Something skinwall for sure, might clean up the Vittoria Evo's I currently have on my road bike because I'll change them out for winter tires. What are your thoughts?

And kal, is is it safe to remove the chainstay protector? I'd prefer 3M Helicopter tape, but if it's really tatty under there I'll keep it as is.

  • Starting to look like a proper bike now, need tot get some tubs so I can mount the Vittoria Evo SC's and shorten the chain and she'll be done.

  • Rad!

  • Officially almost done, need to borrow my dad's socket wrench, because I can't tighten the crank bolts with my box end wrench. Bought rollers so that should solve when-the-fuck-will-I-ever-use-this-bike-problem. Now I have to borrow a decent camera and wait for sunny weather to get some pretty pics.

  • Nice!!! Hopefully we will see down at HH next season! :)

  • Don't think so, wrong side of the canal. ;)

  • Great build.Lovely frame.

  • So freakee, much sexytime.
