I think it's to do with the amount the levers pull the cable through - older SLR will pull it through presumably a shorter distance, so will be less effective than Super SLR which will pull more cable and therefore the pads better contact with the rims.
More than welcome to just try them out and see if they work well..

These have come straight off a newly ordered PX road bike.
Removed from the bike and in perfect condition, haven't even touched a rim yet.
Black Pair Shimano BR-R561 - these are often used on 105 bikes, very similar only different finish.
These retail for more but cheapest I can find is £28-30 for a pair plus shipping online, so £25 delivered in London?
