Advice for my first build...

Posted on
  • So, I've got myself the frame and forks (see attached) and nowt else. Want to do it up nicely but shamefully don't know where to start. Should probably post this in Current Projects but trust you Brighton types more...

    Things that may help:
    • Looking to keep it low-key and classy (brown leather seat/grips, quill stem, flat handlebars, sticker-free rims etc)
    • Will be riding fixed with front brake
    • Expect to use it mostly for commuting but will also hopefully get out for a few longer rides. Have a good hill on my ride home (Bear Road) but was riding 48/16 previously and getting on okay(!) with the hill
    • Budgeting ~£200 (will probably repaint it later on top)
    • 120mm wide dropouts
    • Bottom bracket BST-threaded

Happy to spend countless hours trawling LFGSS for parts but not entirely sure what I'm looking for and don't wanna get ripped off.

    So, suggestions?

Start referring to them as 'Track Ends' or Track Fork Ends'. Not dropouts.

  • After buying the frame and forks I always look for wheels before buying anything else.
For me the 'look' gets started from those two major components.
The 120 rear spacing can be widened using the cold set method (wedge a 2x4 in the frame and push) the safe suggestion is that you can go one size more so 126.
This will broaden your options for wheels.
Then I'd go for sorting out a BB, headset and seat post. I'm a firm believer that you're better off not skimping on the BB and headset as these will affect your ride so much.
When buying your bar/stem combo you need to make sure your clamp sizes match, sometimes people sell whole cockpits which makes life very simple.

I've got tools and a work stand if you ever need to borrow anything.

  • Cheers Tomo187, much appreciated. Watching threads on Components etc but man, do they move fast...

  • Wheels are always a bitch when you're on a budget. They go super fast.
Put up a wanted thread. You don't normally get much of a response but anything helps.

  • I've a Falcon conversion that's being parted out, including a 120 mm rear flip flop. Here it is:

It's a track frame that has the current track hub spacing, why in fucks name would you want to widen the spacing???

Because he's on a budget and it's an option to widen the chances of getting cheaper wheels. It's just advice and options.
As you're not actually supplying advice or help I suggest you go to the angry-man thread and shout there instead.
If you don't have anything nice to say.......

    I was offering advice.

What 126mm wheel would you suggest he go for on a newly spaced track frame that more than likely doesn't have drilling for a rear brake?

Track wheels come up on here for under £100 frequently with fairly good spec open pro/sport on fixed/free hubs.

You've already got some good advice.

Aim for some classic box section rims (no deep v type rims) to keep it looking classic. Mavic Open Sport etc. Laced to generic track hubs is most likely and a great start. Search on here/ebay for cheapest deals. I've sold a pair for <£50 before.

Mostly likely your chainline with standard hubs will be 42mm. Look this up online if you don't know what it means. So next your BB, chainset combo will need to fit this. Most cheap track chainsets will fit this mould with a 103mm BB. Or road cranks with the chainring in the inner ring position work great.

Then the contact points (saddle, bar/stem combo, pedals etc) should just turn up on here regularly. I have a few bits that I could sell you if you're itching to get started.

This has all been written down hundreds of times on here, but I hope it helps.

  • the cold set method

    bender.
