Help speccing new Moots

Posted on
  • OK, I've been lusting after a ti bike for ages and have finally scrimped together enough £££. Was originally considering an Enigma but was then seduced by the idea of a Moots Vamoots (not sure yet whether to go for Vamoots or the CR version). Obviously a bike for many years riding but short term goal is to use to get fit for and then do Fred Whitton.

Inspired by the thread elsewhere here, I am off to Bespoke Cycling on friday for a fitting, followed I hope by some serious shopping. Wouldn't mind some help from others here on what to spec, specifically:

    • ti stem or not? I've heard good and bad things. Moots stem looks v sexy though

    • likewise on a ti (Moots?) seatpost, or should I go carbon for comfort?

    • wheels. I was thinking of h plus son archetype with some decent hubs - prob can't afford chris king but might stretch to Royce. Any views here? Alternatively, what about a Mavic wheel (I have Open Pros on my fixed which have been great for the past 6 yrs)

    • on gears I am pretty much (but not finally) decided on Athena triple (cos I am a fat git who will need help getting up 30% hills in Cumbria).

All help gratefully received. Never had a bike fitting before either so if anyone has any tips for any questions I should be asking on Friday, shoot away...

  • if you can afford moots finishing kit, then go for it

re gears - get the ones you will use - i'd look at a compact double rather than a triple

re the fitting, list all the things you do and don't like about your current set up, any pains, where and what causes them (out of the saddle, too long seated, standing sprints etc) and any other injuries you may have

  • IMO ti finishing kit looks rubbish - with possible exception of a nice seatpost.

With James on the compact double - that plus a 27 on the back will get you up anything.

Re: fitting - keep in mind you will want to keep this bike for a long time (hopefully) - so go for a size that will allow some room for adjustment fit-wise in years to come.

  • Go for the moots stem n seatpost as well if you can. id buy em used if i were you. Retail is abit ridiculous and i can't even tell the difference of a used one from a new one after 2 years of use. There are stiffer stems out there if thats a priority.

Get moots spacers if you get the stem. Others wont fit as nicely with the stem as outer dia will be off unless you get lucky.

Carbon post wont ad any comfort, just bs imo.

Hope you love it when you get it !

  • IME carbon posts do make a difference to comfort compared with alu. However, the shorter they are the less difference they make and some make more of a difference than others.

I haven't tried a ti seatpost though, so can't comment on that.

TBH this all comes down to your budget. Cutting out the stem and post and going for cheap wheels now would drop a lot of the cost if you needed to. If you don't then just go with what you like the look of best and will make you enjoy the bike. It's going to be great whatever.

  • IMHO the finish and detailing on the Moots stem/post explain the cost, and as long of as you like the looks, it would be daft not to get them with the frame. and a long (springy) Ti post is just about the best use of this material
pm if you want some photos of mine

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. Couldn't stretch to the full Moots finishing kit so in the end I have gone for a Vamoots CR with Enve fork, stem, handlebars and seat post. Chris King headset (black) and, for wheels, i went for the Archetype rims on matching Chris King hubs. Went for a Chorus groupset (manual not EPS). Can't wait to get my hands on it! I'll post some pics when I can.

  • Sounds like a great build! Id black out the enve logos if you can for an even better looking bike, but thats ofc down to personal preference.

    Enjoy!

  • Owe you guys a pic of the finished bike - sorry for the delay (seems to have been raining ever since I picked her up!). Really happy but wish I could black out all those Enve logos like bjorn suggested.
