I'd put Big Apples on this - commute all week and then swap to knobblies and get muddy at the weekend

Yep! By far the best commuter bike've ever had!

London roads are no short of a trail when it comes to surface quality.
The thick tyres take the blow and hydro disc brakes just work in any condition.

If the surly wasn't a little big for me i'd have bought it.

Totally, my journey is mostly back streets, many of which are horrific, nearly came off on Friday after hitting a pothole. My concern is that I dont want to get a bike I feel like im dragging to work, how well can something like this roll on Big Apples or similar?? I was riding to work on my GT pro series 24 on big apples and it was a bit of a drag.

My strava data (private as its commuting) says my average speed is the highest while commuting on this bike, compared to sweet fixehs, road bikes etc.

I dont know how but its just faster! I am running 38x16 on schwalbe big apple 2"
