You could have at least rhymed it...
-
• #3
Make sure you've got plenty of $$$$$$
Cheap is ugly !!! -
• #4
well plenty of $$$$$ is something i don't have
but i have a bike, so not in a huge rush
the plan is to save and buy good parts
that are good quality and look good toono to rhyming...this contemporary poetry
its about expression man...
the soul doesn't rhyme...
it...

Just picked up my new build this morning. I chose the parts and the guy built it see what you think. It's the Black custom Dolan FXE :-
-
• #6
that's nice man.
aesthetically...wheels are becoming the hardest
thing for me to decide on.i like what you've done with yours.
i'm deciding between a mismatched pair
of deep v and thin rims
or double deep v's...
but seeing as wheels are going to be
the last thing i buy, i have time to decide. -

I do a 32 mile commute to work thats why I went for Mavic open pro rims. If your just using it for posing and short commutes choice is open ended and all down to $$. Plenty of choice out there .
-
• #8
What size and technical details are you confused with? Do you have a picture of the frame?
-
• #9
my commute to work is about 5 mile ride if i stretch it
so, like you say options are open, which doesn't help!i'll post a picture of the frame on monday.
Its a Meilic bike - mash copy.
when i say technical specs...
its things like "threaded" vs "non threaded" fork
to me that just sounds like a different language
you gotta understand, i'm a complete
novice with this...
so simple stuff like that (not simple to me)
are things that i will need to work out.my first step is going to kinoko with the frame
and getting advice on parts
i'll buy a few things new from them,
but hoping to buy most of the stuff second hand
on this forum. -
• #10
Don't go with white grips. Especially not white ourys. They will look disgusting in seconds.
-
• #11
Make a list of parts you have and parts you need and we can help. Of course you can go to kinoko if you want, but you said you wanted to do it yourself.
So you have the frame (or will have), does it include forks, headset or bottom bracket? -
• #12
Stay on here. The advice is sound and if you post a "wanted" ad, you're guaranteed someone will have what you're after. Did you buy the mielec that was on sale here around a week ago? 59cm if I remember right.

If you bought the frame only you'll need forks and a headset (you want threadless, 1 1/8" for the forks, for the headset it depends wether they got it with standard 1 1/8 headset or with integrated, so find that out)
Other than that you need
Seatpost (seller should tell you what size)
Seatpost clamp (seller should tell you what size)
SaddleCranks (track cranks, S75, omnium, on one track)
Chainring (should come with cranks hopefully 1/8 46-49 teeth)
Bottom Bracket (depends on the cranks, but BSA 68mm british threaded)
Chain (1/8 track chain)
Sprocket (1/8 ~17-19 teeth)
Lockring (locks sprocket onto wheel hubs)Wheelset, track hubs (700C)
Stem (1 1/8 threadless, go with something around 100mm in length and 0-10 degrees if your not sure on fitting)
Bars (risers/drops/bullhorns)
Bar tape.Front brake calliper (standard reach, most road front callipers)
Brake lever (crosstop or BMX lever for risers or hooded road levers for drops)Pedals - whatever you fancy (with suitable retention if your going fixed, BMX straps probably)

shit...thanks guys. This is really helpful!
george91: Yes, its just a frame with headset, so i will need a fork
and I'm looking for a black carbon fork, and will need a bottom bracket.
The Kinoko thing is just so i can get some advice and i would only
buy a chainset, chain and bottom bracket from there, as i'd want those
parts to be new.Chak: Yes, you got it...thats the frame i bought.
rogan: Thanks so much for this...i did have list, but there are
a number of things that you've listed that i didn't have...I'm
printing this list! -

There was an alpina track fork going on here a while back that would be good for you, it suits the frame well. Or you can also get them new from Dolan.

• #16
yeah mielecs look good with alpinas
-
• #17
Yeah it was yours I was thinking of B0N0R.
-
• #18
That nice B0N0R...like the simplicity,
which is something i'm going for on mine too.george91: Alpina is at the top of my list, was thinking
second hand, but looks like new isn't that
expensive either. Thanks for the linkOn wheels...i think i'm going to do a set from
v-sprint...thin and machined for the front
and deep v for the back...all black. My only
issue with the v-sprint wheels is the decals
but i guess, worse comes to worse, i could
paint over it. -
• #19
the decals come off
-
• #20
mismatched wheels usually look a bit odd and er...mismatched. are you sure you want to go that route?
-
• #21
well, i like the mismatched theme right now...
also the 40mm wheels aren't machined,
so i wouldn't be able to have that on the front. But I change my mind like a bisexual when
it comes wheel options...so tomorrow
i might think about matched pair. -
• #22
V-Sprint are the shiz. My front is still going strong after two years. Still silky smooth and hasn't required a true yet! A tiny bit heavy, but for crappy streets that's what you want.

Any particular reason you want a new chainset? Just as an example, this is an old Shimano road chainset. Think it was Exage or something But you can get a square taper 105 chainset on eBay for about a tenner. They've been powder coated black (I had a load of stuff done) Chainring is stronglight dural and was £12 but you could easily spend a bit more for something nicer. Bottom bracket is a 107mm cheap Shimano square taper (UN54 I think) which gives a 42mm chainline. Being an old road crank, it is 130mm BCD which is not to everyone's taste but the point I was trying to make is you can make cheap look okay. This whole bike was done on the cheap. Cheap cranks, stem was £8 on eBay, rims are old ones that have been powder coated n restickered, saddle recovered, etc. Hope this is helpful.

Chris Borneo - thanks for the advise, i will look into
those chain sets. I guess my reasoning for buying new
is because of the importance and the fact that being a
novice, i would hate to buy something second hand which
fails on me, causing a potentially dangerous situation. On the wheels, i'm leaning more towards getting a slim
profile wheels, not even sure thats the right term, but like
the bike B0N0R posted above. But i dont know what to look
for. It seems like the V-Sprint wheels all have deep rims...
Is there particular models that you guys know of that have that
slim profile look? (also educate me on the right lingo!)I should get the frame tomorrow...and i went to Kinoko on
Friday, and they are having a really good sale. Some of the
small stuff like stems, seats etc are actually priced very close
to second hand prices. So i'll probably hit some of that. Finally, what are thoughts on Columbus carbon forks?
like this one:

While here, it's actually more advisable to buy second hand for anything. Think about it; so long as it's not battered, second hand items have been tried and tested! So any failure that could have occurred would have happened while in the possession of the first owner. Buying new means you will be the first to experience any sort of failure as the product is fresh off the conveyor belt. Then again, some would argue against. I apply the same shopping habits of mine from technology to bikes, I buy second hand near mint for a part I will abuse. Then again, I chat a lot of shit.
The lowest profile rims V-Sprint do are 21mm take a ruler out and see. I'm personally a big fan of Box Section rims. Mavic Open Pro, H+Son TB14, Ambrosio Excursion, Araya RS-430 (Mmm!)
So I've just bought a frame on here...a mash copy
and now I have to get every other part.
right now I'm thinking this was a mistake
I have no idea what i need to buy,
that's not true i know the parts...but
don't know the details about sizes
and other technical specs required!
I'm sure there will be many mistakes,
but i don't want to go the easy route of
popping down to Kinoko
I want to do it myself...and it will be fun.
it will be frustrating and i may waste money
but dammit...it will be fun!
so, all i know right now is, the frame is a dark
blueish purple ...but not 100% until i
actually get the frame (on Monday). but based
on that, i am thinking every other part will be
BLACK...except for White handlebar grip...
thinking high riser bars with white Oury grips.
photos will follow...but I'm also thinking there
is a good chance that this thread
will be a train wreck...
which will mirror the progress of the build!
BTW...if anyone wanted to give me some advice
along the way, it would extreeeemmmmllly appreciated!
