  • As fall approaches, and rain already is pissing down, I have started thinking about my ride for this cx season.

I wanted to built my own steel frame and use some carbon forks I have from an past ride, but as I don't have enough funding, nor a workshop at the moment, I will be using a Pomp frame I got cheap from a friend.

    So far I got:

Wheels are 32h Mavic Mach 2 CD 2 (I want to try tubs this season)

Other than that I have som Deda compact bars, Ritchey stem, flite, thomson setback and other stuff laying around.

BUT my main issue is the drive train. So far I have the pick between SRAM s300, FSA Grossamer og some FSA carbon kranks (also laying around).
Should I go for s300 with a 10 sp chain, as the chainring I have got for that set is 130 bcd 10 sp. Or should I go for a thicker chain?

I am also wandering if I can use QR with the track ends of the pomp? Will I need a chain tug or will the QR be strong enough? Should I get a ss specific wheelset? I have only ridden sscx with chaintensioner previously and that no good to me.

    Main reference is

  • What's the rear spacing on your pomp? The standard is 120mm so if you want to use those wheels will be 130mm. So your options are; 1) cold set the rear, 2) rebuild the hub, 3) use a surly fixer and run a SS cog.

I'd coldset it. I recon the freewheel hubs on those wheels will be better than any freewheel cog you'll be able to stick on. Plus why fuck around with threads when you have a cassette.

On the cranks, why don't you use the ones on there? You can use a single speed 3/32 chain on a 10 speed, you don't need a 10 speed specific chain as far as I know. Also worth pointing out that there are plenty of 130BCD chainrings that aren't expensive. I think I've got a 42t Silver TA one. If you're interested let me know and I'll have a look.

If you use a decent DA style QR then I recon you'd be fine with a QR. Otherwise you could prob switch out the axle.

  • 130 mm spacing, but would be able to cold set it if it was 120.

I guess I will start out with the wheels I have, find descent QRs and run the SRAM s300 cranks for starters.

And thanks for your offer, but as I am based in Denmark that might be a hassle ;-)

  • Good luck with the build, I wait for good things

  • Thx

  • I'd definately use the wheelset you've got with the existing hub.

It also means you'll be able to dial the chainline in perfectly with some spacers. You've also got more margin just incase you end up having some chainstay/crank arm clearance issues and need a spacer under the BB cups.

For the QR's enclosed cams are best

Something like this will be fine: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Vintage-Wheel-Skewer-Quick-Release-Dura-Ace-rear-/151055199965?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item232b976edd Although the P&P is a bit toppy.

...these look like a pretty good deal too: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Ultegra-6700-Quick-Release-Road-Bike-Skewers-Front-Rear-Set-/111140018806?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item19e0761a76

  • Personally I would go for the Alan key security skewers for ss. Also I am pretty sure you can run most chains on a 10spd one, I have a standard single speed chain on a road crank and cassette cog as my sscx set up, works fine.

  • Not a fan of cold setting myself and I know that a few people on here have had Pomps crack on the chain stays too but if you're gonna go that route, I'd go for some kind of bolt in hub for sure. I have two of these running single speed and bolt on fixed, without chain tugs, and they never move, ever! If you are gonna stick with skewers though, Shimano all the way. I use an allen key skewer on the front but they're not man enough for single speed, with track ends, imo.

  • For some reason it doesn't seem to say what the spacing is on the Hope trials hub. I assume its 135mm, but from the diagrams
    http://www.hopetech.com/webtop/modules/_repository/documents/PROIIEvoSS-Trialexploded1.pdf
it looks like there's 2x10mm spacers there... So can you take it down to 120mm?

  • Nah, the spacers sit over the axle so it's 135 only.

  • I've looked at modding one of their road hubs with the single speed freehub body and custom axle to get 120 but the bearing dimensions vary between hubs so it's far from straight forward.

  • Rear spacing is 130 mm though. I just need to get some strong skewers like hugo7 suggests.
It's the old Pomp version apparently. They used to have black rear stays. Weird color scheme btw. But it might end op working anyways.

  • Look out for tyre clearance on those older pomps, might struggle for mud room with some of the larger 'cross tyres. Newer frames are much improved in this department, though I'd prefer 135mm to 120mm.

  • My mate has been using it without any issues

  • There may well have been some variation amongst the 135mm models then too, I remember having very little room fitting anything much bigger than 30mm.

  • '

    My frame arrived.

It will be getting these Leopard custom CX-1 (JPX) forks, just NOS and without the gold sticker.

I fitted the wheels to the frame and there are no spacing issues. Also I will be running s300 cranks on it. Hopefully I will have it build up by wednesday.

  • I am getting there. Though I am pretty sad about clearance for the rear wheel. I thought it would be a little more mudfriendly. Also I am using a Shimano cam skewer on the back but the rear wheel keeps slipping. Would allen key skewers be stronger?

  • General rule is no quick release on track drop outs I am told ?

  • ^^ You should be able to get it to hold. You could try roughing up the service of the dropouts.

Otherwise I think a chain tensioner would be the safest bet and probably a similar cost as allen key skewers.

  • QR's only work with chaintensioners Hulsroy. Have I tought you nothing? ;)

I have one for you for free on wednesday.

    Looks rad.

  • Cool burger. It was horribly frustrating not go for a ride yesterday. My njs chain tensioner didn't fit the fat dropouts.

  • What brake levers are you using?

  • Tektro. They are great and feel like Campy ones from last years models.

    Got my new headset today.

And new forks. Identical to the ones I will end up with, but with too short a steerer. My buddy couldn't find the other one so I am using this until he does. It ways in at 480 grams.

I will take better pictures tomorrow.

  • Very nice looking to build something like this myself
