A little bit more money can get you Hope hoops consisting of ZTR crests laced to Hope Pro2s or whatever the MTB version are called. Light, nice wide rims, solid as anything hubs and good reviews. I think it's about 310 for the set.

Just google hope hoops. Most places stock em.

I found the cheapest place for mine was an eBay shop, I got Pro II Evo on TN719's.

Thanks guys. Will have a closer look at the Hopes. A Crest set goes for about 290 at Winstanleysbikes.

Who are total cunts, but if they have stuff at least it's cheap.

Haha. Looked them up. Not the best reviews out there.
Wiggle had them for £285. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/hope-hoops-pro2-evo-mtb-wheelset/

I like Hoops - I have them on my MTB. Gotta love that freehub.
Personally I wouldn't use 29er Crests on a cross bike though. Why? They don't really suit cross rubber, or road rubber that well to be honest. And you'll be running tubes, which means you'll need to overcome the beadlock should anything go wrong, without the upside of tubeless.
A23s or TB14s in grey handbuilt on XT or Novatec hubs would be my suggestion.

Yeah... Listen to Howard. He knows his cross shit. I know nothing, ha. Slightly off topic, but Howard, what do crests suit in that case? MTB tyres?

Yeah Crests are a very light Cross Country (XC) rim. They'll take up to 2.35" happily, and some people - whippets like me - run them as all mountain (AM) rims, too, rather than the Arch, which is a touch heavier / wider.
Of course the only 'Mountain' mine have seen is Leith Hill, but hey ;)

The other option of course is Iron Cross.
Stans reckon they can't be used with road rubber at high pressure though, unlike Crests. But if you are just commuting on fat rubber, say 30mm, you won't be running 75psi + anyway.

The TN719 is fairly agricultural I guess, but it'll take road tyres at high pressure or cross tyres at low pressure, I flatted at the top of a long downhill section of Pave on Paris-Roubaix and hammered the shit out of the rear on the descent, it was fine (me, less so- I think I lost a filling).
Very tough, anyway- although I am sure they aren't the lightest rims out there.

Actually swaying between building an SS all rigid Inbred 29" gravel/snow mashing monster, or a Pompetamine.
Basically a weird mix between these two, as both are like taken from the build idea in my head. They are both running the Stans Crest + Hope combo.
I wont be running tyres slimmer than 35mm and never fatter than say 2.2". Won't be hitting any hard rocky trails either. CX terrain really.

Inbred! Stick some Midge bars on it. Win. Just run MTB rubber, tubeless.

^^ who has the pimpest single speed thread>>>>
Thinking of building a Pompetamine for some gravel/mud fun this fall and to commute on when the snow falls but need some advice on wheels.
Disc hubs, Black, Shimano/Sram cassette (will be running SS with spacers) and 135mm.
Have had a look at Kinesis Crosslight CXDisc for £275 and some Crabon disc wheels for the same price. Then there are 29" wheels but they tend to be so darn heavy and wide.
Any other recommendations for wheels in the range of £200-300?
Hugs and kisses.
