• An all original classic 1989 Peugeot 'Touraine' touring bike in mint condition. This is mechanically A1, as well as visually. It is in such good condition that the original pedal-powered light generator still works!

Only modern upgrades include new Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres which put on last month when the bike was given a full-service at East Central Cycles on Exmouth Markets (receipt as proof). I've also added a strap-on bottle cage. I have the original Michelin tyres (Made in France) which still have 90% thread if you want them for the complete original build.

I'm not at all technical so apologies if this is limited - but this is what I can determine:

    • 23" Peugeot frame (Made in France)
    • Maillard hubs/spokes - 700c (Made in France)
    • Simplex Alpha gears and crank set (Made in France) - 2 x 5 so a total of - 10 gears
    • Weinmann side pull break callipers
    • CLB break levers
    • Atax handlebar stem
    • Saddle seems unbranded but says Made in Italy on underside
    • Original chrome pannier rack, chrome mud guards and light generator as mentioned above.

No rust or pitting, although there are some very minor scratches on the frame which is certainly nothing major.

Very rare to find a Peugeot in this condition. No time wasters please. Priced to go - £320

Note, I am based in central London.

  • Anyone?!

  • Not pretending to be an expert, but with some on-the-fly research, the Touraine was near the bottom of the Peugeot line in the late 80s, actually more of a pseudo-randonneur. Notwithstanding its great condition, compared to Columbus, Tange, and Reynolds tubing frames one sees on the forums, the HLE Mangalloy (lugless) is of admittedly inferior quality. All in all, standard low-end components considered, the bike seems overpriced (albeit not terribly so).

  • Sorry mate, but the only thing of note about this, is its time warp condition: it is a perfectly decent, but nondescript bike.

A couple of years back I picked up a 1989 Camargue in similar condition (but higher up the range) for £60, which was a fair price.

  • Thanks for the comments guys- it's interesting to get some feedback. I've priced it at £320 as when I had it serviced, the guy in the shop said I would be crazy to let it go for under 350 given the rarity and condition. Knowing how people get demolished on this forum for over pricing things, I thought I'd go slightly below.

    Lets see what happens..

  • It's exactly as Scilly said. Given that with enough work even the most battered bike can be restored, provided the frame does not have any permanent damage, to price a bike above 300 GBP, it needs to exhibit some extraordinary characteristics. If it's not e.g. a Reynolds 531 f&f, for such a Peugeot, I would expect it to be upgraded to Shimano Arabesque, or full Campagnolo.

Honestly, I have no idea, how the secondary bike market functions in your area, but with the competition around here, it would be next to impossible to get that kind of money. Then again, the fellow at the shop might have a point and you may have more luck posting a classified ad locally.

  • I've seen Reynolds 653 complete bikes with decent specs go for 200 on eBay. I think you're looking at 120-180 max for this. Nice condition but nothing special apart from that.

Are you the original owner? Did you buy it to sell?

Seconded. Around 120-140 GBP seems fair.

Vitus tubing, high-end Gitane (french, 80s, great condition), with more than decent components, asking less, including postage.

  • I didn't buy it to sell. I used it for a weekend touring trip as I didn't have a bike - which is why I had the service and new tyres put on. It puzzles me how peoples valuations can be so different but I guess that's how it is.

  • I've had one of these for the past 31 years. Acquired it as a pile of bits and rebuilt it twice. Now running as a single-speed commuter, it's like your grandmother's broom. The only original bit is the frame as the forks were bent beyond repair a couple of years ago.

The groupset was nothing special at the time. This was a decent (but not great) mass-production frame made of non-chromoly steel with stamped, not forged drop-outs. All sizing is French, which is a right pain when you're trying to find a replacement for something.

Given all that, it's not worth the original asking price - sorry. A previous poster's estimate is nearer the mark IMO...

  • If you want that kind of money i would put it on gumtree, but you wont sell it on here for that, everyones a little too savvy!

I got my RIH (reynolds 531) with shimano 600 arabesque groupset for £300 off the forum and that included postage from the Netherlands.

  • Thanks for all the feedback - very useful.
