  • Hey All
This is a small attempt at starting a list of coffee shops that can be recommended to locals and travellers alike. You can also mention places to stay away from. I don't know html or anything that would assure that the cities would remain alphabetical, can anyone set that up?
Maybe use asterisks to denote goodness, let's say out of 5?

    I'll start with my location.

WINNIPEG - I should add that the staff at all of the following have been friendly and welcoming.

***** Cafferia 360 - great Italian style coffee shop that gets it right
**** X-Cues - Sal and co are great hosts, quality can depend on barista
*** Cafe Postal - in St. Boniface, good coffee west coast style
*** Thom Bargen - upstarts, lemony west coast brew
*** Parlour Coffee - design conscious makers of west coast style coffee
** Make Coffee - Least favourite of the newbies around here
**** Nucci's Gelati - not specifically a coffee joint, but do an excellent brew

  • Nice idea wp. This could be very helpful to people.

Personally, I'd find it most useful to know what the coffee is like but I'm guessing you'd only give 4 or 5 stars if the coffee is great?

  • 'xactly.
Also, I tend to prefer older style Italian coffees over the brighter, west coast ones, so I can imagine flame wars over what tastes good. And LFGSS loves a good burn.

  • Oh yes it does :)

Good timing this, as I'm off to Italy next week for the first time in 7 years. I'm wondering how palatable the coffee shop coffees actually are now - I recall that Lavazza is everywhere, black is best but always with a glass of water as it's super strong.

I'm not expecting to find any soya milk :(

  • they got some strange/funky coffee shops here maaaaaaan

  • ^ Where's here?
My experiences with coffee in Milan was that the best I found was in the Milano Centrale!

  • Profile says "Location: A parallel universe"...so that's where here is.

  • Begging your pardon Miss Mouse
the parallel universe currently exists in Holland

  • :) Ha!

Well yes, many friends have described it as such...the ones who made it back...

  • there is one i know of where they keep things i leave behind when the short term memory goes

  • Can you remember what it's called?

  • only on Wednesdays

  • I lied
    Katsu in De Pijp, Amsterdam

  • LOS ANGELES

***** Intelligentsia (Silver Lake & Venice) - Open very early 'til very late, perfect coffee for both casual drinker and 'enthusiast'. Long queue, but it moves quick enough. The standard by which other coffee shops in LA should be judged.
**** **Spring For Coffee **(Downtown LA) - Tiny shop with minimal seating and amazing coffee on one of DTLA's more buzzing (bike friendly) streets. Love it.
**** LA Mill (Silver Lake) - Fantastic coffee, lots of custom options, seriously good food. Expensive though, and the Wait staff aren't so great.
**** Handsome Coffee Roasters (Downtown LA) - Great espresso, no stupid milkshakes or WiFi. They don't even keep sugar on the premises. It's damn good, but so minimal/purist that I can't even take my non-coffee-drinker wife there.
**** Proof Bakery (Atwater Village) - Good coffee, great sandwiches and juices. Perfect location (for cyclists) on the way back from Angeles Crest / Pasadena.
*** Broome Street General Store (Silver Lake) - Again, very good coffee and food, but a few hipster niggles. Slow service, expensive, with 'lazy' opening hours.
*** Coffee Commissary (West Hollywood) - Good coffee, great location. If the Egg Slut food truck rolls up whilst you're there, it's a five-star experience.

A friend of mine is also in the process of opening up his first coffee shop in West Hollywood, it should hopefully be operational by September. I'll add it to the list when it is.
Also under development, an Ace Hotel in Downtown that will have a Stumptown Coffee Roasters on site.

  • ^ Nice one!

  • Thanks Mr B

  • Melbourne (Aus):
Brother Baba Budan (central Melbourne) *****
Market Lane (Prahran Market and Victoria Market) *****
East Brunswick Project (Brunswick East) *****
    Proud Mary (Collingwood) ****
    De Clieu (Fitzroy) ****
Plantation Cofee (Melbourne Central shopping center)****
    St Ali (South Melbourne) ****
Dead Man Espresso (South Melbourne) ****

Please bear in mind that even the ones I've given 4 stars still serve absolutely amazing coffee.

  • And now for some special requests.

    Tallin
    Stockholm
    Hamburg
