Campy Vento Cassette Question

Posted on
  • Quick Question,

Want to purchase a pair of Ventos 20 spoke.

Looking to run on a campy 9 speed setup.

Quite confused as to whether this is possible from info gathered online.

    Anyone help?

  • They come with an 8-speed freehub, so you can't just put a 9-speed cassette on. http://www.campyonly.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2124 suggests that you can change the freehub (assuming you can get the part) but that it's not recommended.

If you want to try just running an 8-speed cassette with 9-speed mech and shifters, there's a difference in mech travel of just under 0.5mm per gear, so your indexing would be about 2mm out at each end of the cassette - I'd say this would run quite rough. You might be able to tweak the cable routing at the mech slightly to change the amount of movement per click of the shifter (lots of detail about cable pull, cassette spacing, and using Campag and Shimano together at http://www.ctc.org.uk/cyclists-library/components/transmission-gears/derailleur-gears/shimergo), but to be honest I think it's probably more hassle than it's worth trying to get it to work.

  • Yeah was pretty much the info I saw.

Just had a few hits popping up online running 9s, guess they switched freehub.

    Cheers for the reply.

  • you can also respace an 8 speed cassette using 9 speed spacers to give the right spacing, and use an extra spacer at the back of the cassette so that the 8 speed cogs are held tight when the lockring is tightened.
If I recall you have to cut parts of the splines on the plastic spacers to get them to fit, but I only did this once ages ago and I can't recall the exact detail. I did get it to work fine when I upgraded a bike from 8 to 9 speed when it first became available, and I kept the old wheels for a while.
