Singlespeed/fixed wheel recommendations

Posted on
  • So, 2 days ago some bastards broke into the 'secure' bike storage in our block of flats in the dead of night, while the night porter was doing something other than his job, and stole people's bikes and components. They also stole the wheels off my singlespeed and dented/bent the frame trying to wrench the bike off the rack I'd locked it to.

Someone I saw in Condor said that a good set of wheels made riding in the city muy comfortabler after switching to Mavic Ellipses.

So, I was wondering if you've got any recommendations for a decent wheelset. Until now I've always ridden singlespeed rather than fixed. Is it easy to switch over? I've just got this picture of myself cruising into lights/down a hill, forgetting I'm riding fixed and face planting.

    Any help appreciated, ta!

  • Hello there mate, sorry to hear about your bikes and hope your landlord sorts out some compensation for you.

Riding fixed is great and relatively easy to pick up once you get passed not being able to coast, don't go brakeless, at least at first you should leave both your brakes on, remove the rear once you've learned to skid if you feel like it.

I'd say V-sprint wheels are nice for riding around town, solid and very well priced.

There are many options here so you know you're getting the wheelset you want.

Jim is great to deal with and usually has the wheels sent out very quickly, you get a £10 discount on wheelsets by entering the discount code found in this thread.

  • Cheers for the advice Indra. I'll definitely check out varno's thread.

Any other recommendations? Has anyone tried the halo aerotrack/aerorage or mavic ellipses?

  • I've only ridden on Miche Pistard WR and Gipiemme wheels.

Miche Pistard WR: Awesome wheels. Keep on rolling
Gipiemme wheels: Terrible quality. Destroyed my rear hub while sprinting. Front got destroyed by the loose bearrings that destroyed the inside of the hub.

Despite their low spoke count I've heard mavic ellipses are very strong and with the decals removed they look good as well

  • Thanks for all your replies. Currently considering Mavic Ellipses. Any other recommendations/suggested to avoids would be most welcome.

  • Mavic ellipses are great but they have a non standard lockring so watch out for that, Miche also have this.

  • Thanks again for the good advice!

I can definately recommend aerorage/track, they just dont break or get out of true. Only bad side of them is that they are hard to get sometimes, they are almost always sold out from every place. (i think wiggle has some in stock atm)

  • Just get some Navigator Pistas from Dolan. Affordable and bombproof.
