BB replacement, beginners level questions

Posted on
  • So my bb has developed an intermittent tick which is just about driving me up the wall. Given a new bb can be bought for around £20 I figured swapping it out for a new one is the easiest solution except I have no real idea what this involves.

    So general comments/tips/advice welcome.

My thoughts are along the lines of remove cranks, use bb tool, replace with new bb, replace cranks... Is that the long and short of it?

Also when purchasing a new bb I appear to have the option of with or without axle... Given I retaining my old cranks I guess I should also keep my current axle as they will form something of a bond.

The current bb is a 68*103 that came with my langster.

    Cheers for any/all help.

  • I would check that your creak is defo BB first.

It is just as likely to be loose chainring bolts or cranks bolts.
Give everything a tighten and a degrease, clean and regrease then have another check.

Take the chain off the front chainring and spin the cranks, if it feels smooth and there is no crunching, knocking or gritty feeling in the BB when you hold the downtube then it is probably fine. You could even put your ear to the downtube to listen to the bearings in motion and any suspect vibrations they might be making.

If you do decide to replace the BB is it likely to be a cartridge type.

  • Probably just the bb shells are loose.
Remove, clean, re-grease, re-fit - before you spend any money.

  • ok, cool. But what does 'remove' mean in this context? Can I get away with allen keys/spanners?

  • You will need a BB removal tool specific to the BB.
You will also need a crank puller.

Post a pic of the BB when you have removed the cranks and someone on here will be able to tell you which BB tool you need.

  • Or indeed, post a pic of as much of the BB as you can see before you have removed the cranks.

  • Here's a off side close up...

  • Looks to me like you'll need a Shimano pattern removal tool.
