I went to a showing of 'Half the Road' yesterday at Look Mum Mare Street. Also in attendance were moog, velogance, ms.chris, and pootsmanuva. It was pretty funny, with some very good jokes, but also serious.
I didn't realise that there existed an age discrimination rule in women's pro cycling. Apparently, 60% of riders have to be under/up to 28? Also some truly bizarre stuff, like Hein Verbruggen allegedly at one point contemplating the introduction of a rule prohibiting women from racing while menstruating. Brian Cookson came across as a disappointment in this respect, claiming that women were not physically capable of racing distances as long as those raced by men (but at least he did give what seemed like a lengthy interview to Kathryn Bertine, the filmmaker). The overriding impression was that he was trying to protect some kind of hidden agenda.
There seems to be a vicious circle going on in that women's cycling development is held back by too few races and too few opportunities, plus a fair amount of discrimination, and then people like Cookson complain that there aren't the racers to contest, say, a race parallel to the Tour.
I'd always wondered why women's races were so short, and this film gave some of the answers. There were some great examples of women who had busted into previously all-male worlds, e.g. at the Boston Marathon or in triathlon.
Very worth watching, I thought.

Hi LCC!
I’m writing to you on behalf of the British Film Institute about some interesting video content that I thought your readers would be interested in.
I don’t know if you are aware but the BFI recently made a wealth of archival and historical films on the subject of cycling available free to access online for the first time. The films are a brilliant snapshot on the history of cycling within the U.K. Interestingly the city of Nottingham features heavily.
One example is The Raleigh School. This film follows Nottingham youngsters Pat and Adrian as they learn to ride the Raleigh way. The Raleigh School of Cycling was a scheme launched by the Nottingham-based cycle manufacturer in 1955, predating the national Cycle Proficiency test. There are loads of others, so please do check them out, let me know what you think!
We're trying to get the message out about these films to the right communities because it's important that these films are seen, shared and enjoyed after all this time. We are reaching out to important voices within the cycling community such as your own.

This is fantastic stuff - had a look through both threads but couldn't see it mentioned. An Equinox documentary (50 mins) from 1989 about bikes, how awesome they are, and how a few manufacturers, from Jack Taylor to Campagnolo, operate. Wonderful stuff and as interesting and relevant today as it was 30 years ago. I wondered if anyone on here might have popped up in any of the segments...?

I've just created a Youtube channel which I hope will publish various films which will mostly have vintage interest. I'm working in collaboration with Ray Pascoe (cyclists film shows at Hammersmith and E. Finchley) who has a lot of classic material available.
The channel is called 'Vintage Cyclists', since the intention is to concentrate on the men and women rather than the machines. The first little clip I have uploaded tonight is not intended to be typical - it's just an experiment which I've made because I wasn't at all sure I could do it.
There is a sizeable library of old racing films which are not generally available, and we hope to interview a number of racing men from the golden age of the fifties and sixties. Ray has already done a long interview with Alf Engers, but since he has already invested money in putting that onto a CD I'm not certain I can persuade him to make it freely available - we'll have to see.
Anyway, here it is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q50VzULXf-Y
I will post again when there is more to see, but in the meantime I'd like to hear whether this sounds an interesting project, and whether there's anything in particular you'd like to see on film - it is possible it exists!
