  • Got a puncture today, tried to sort it and discovered this, I'm not sure how long it's been like this.

I've only had the wheel 3 months too, I've been using it through winter but just on normal roads and it gets cleaned every weekend.

Anyone else had this happen? I wonder what the chances of getting is sorted under warranty are. =/

Incidentally the spoke nearest the break leads right to the tube valve, can't think if this would indicate anything though.

  • Who built the wheel?

  • send it back.
    they're guaranteed for road use.
    should be just fine.
    actually hipsters got a point.

  • I always do. It may be bollocks but I always do.. ;)

I ask because for it to be laced 3-crossed and pull the spoke through the hub it's either a case of too high tension on the spokes or a faulty hub. Was the hub built in a different configuration before this one?

  • happened to me as well once........on open pros 3x.....definitely not too much tension.........and also seen this happening to miche hubs........probably the fact that they are CNC'ed and not forged.....neither they are phil wood.....

  • Cheers for the input folks, the wheel was built up by Goldtec end of Nov.

It's just been used for commuting ~12 miles/day since then on normal roads so it's not really a great deal of use (or abuse).

Popped Goldtec a mail this morning. You sure they're guaranteed for road use eyebrows? My worry is they'll turn around and tell me it's a track hub so I have no come back.

  • they advertise road use on their site, so my guess is they should be fine about it.
especially as they built the wheel, so in some respects it could be argued that it was their fault....
good luck anyway, I've always liked the company, so we'll see if they impress in customer service.

  • @prime, they say on their website

The VERY popular double sided flip flop hub used for many types of riding from London couriers to Velodrome track racing.

they are used by the majority of couriers in London, because of their durability.

    they gotta replace then??

  • i would be very surprised if they don't replace it.

  • I've seen that happen to Miche hubs not to Goldtecs tho'... They should replace it no problem, bit slow up there but they're good people... I prefer Goldtecs to my old Phil Woods, much smoother...

  • Well, from my personal experience, Goldtec track hubs are rather nice but the customer service is appalling.

I tried to place an order for a front wheel at the beginning of december last year and at the end I have to give up: several emails exchanged, few phone calls made, your order should be ready in the next few days, sorry we misquoted postal charges, send me only the hub, sorry this year we have updated postal charges and we will get back to you with a new quote, etc..... more than two months later I am still waiting for a reply.

That kind of failure should be under guarantee, especially if they have built the wheel themselves.

    Good luck.

    I

  • Got a mail back from them today, they're asking for my address to send out a new hub shell which is good.

Not sure if this is fair though, since they built up the wheel and I'll now have to pay to get the wheel rebuilt. I guess it depends on what they're warranty covers?

  • I'd send them back the whole wheel and get them to fix it... You're right, doesn't seem fair at all...

  • You could ask them to send you a brand new wheel and when it arrives send the old one back.

If you have to send it back for repair, and it's your only bike, then you'll be bikeless while you are waiting. I'd probably prefer to get the replacement shell and get someone from here to build it for about a tenner.

edit: you could ask them to cover the cost of the rebuild. almost cheaper than posting a wheel.

  • It's complicated a little because they didn't provide the rim, I wanted them to they were out of CXP33s.

I therefore had to get one sent through to them which means they provided hub and spokes and the build, so technically speaking I didn't buy a wheel off them, I bought some parts and paid for them to build it up. I wouldn't expect my LBS to rebuild my wheel for free because a part failed under warranty.

On the other hand I did actually order a fully built wheel through their website and sorted a discount over the phone for the missing rim, I guess you can look at it either way.

Hmm but I suppose that since it was their component that failed and as a result I'm going to be £30 rebuild fee out of pocket because of this, they should really sort the whole thing?

its annoying but i think you'll just have to swallow the cost of a rebuild, ask someone on the forum, to do it should cost less than £30.

  • dogballs seems keen most times to help wheel builds.

  • dogs will do it for a tenner. (well thats what i paid)
    unless he doesn't like you.

  • Thanks v much for offer of dogsball's help! ;-)

I'm up in Manc though so not so straightforward.

Thinking about suggesting to them I return the wheel and get a working wheel back in return, since that is in effect what I paid for initially.

  • They provided a wheel, it failed, it's not fit for purpose. Send it back and get a replacement or full refund.

  • tell BETD to get you another one.

  • yeah

GBH charge somewhere IRO £15 a wheel I believe. There's a thread on the Manc section about local wheelbuilders.

  • Have requested a replacement wheel, seems fair enough really. They built it & it was their component that failed. It doesn't seem right I should have to pay for a rebuild.

  • Still waiting on them to sort this, they've had the wheel since end of Feb I specifically told them I commute, that the bike is my means of getting to and from work, you'd have therefore thought they'd tried to sort this out quickly.

Have sent numerous mails querying, last reply said

we will try to get it built and out tommorow
Try? It's been a month! Unsurprisingly it appears they didn't manage to get this sorted as I am still wheel-less.

Have to say this reflects my dealings with Goldtec when originally purchasing the wheel, absolutely awful customer service. Let's just hope the eventual replacement hub lasts longer than the 3 months the previous one did, I don't fancy going through this again.
