  • anyone buying the cranks can always get this £10 BB right?

No sorry the isis and octalink BB's are different...i think

  • pm'd

  • Dibs pm'd

  • best cheapo BB for this is the 105 octalink "5500" one - about £30-35 new, often 10-15 s/h; otherwise ultegra (6500) or dura ace road (7700) both work as long as they are 109 or 109.5 and octalink V1

  • Didn't someone say road and track were different spline lengths?

    pgin tstr

  • track is 109.5

  • so these cranks + this chainring = sexy times

  • it's such a minimal difference i wouldn't worry about getting the track specific one (7710) although if tossing up between that and the 7700 road, the track one is sealed

EDIT: ignore me they are all 109.5 i think

  • To my eyes, BB-5500* looks like Octalink v2, whereas BB-7710 is v1. I wouldn't put DuraAce track cranks on a 105 BB for that reason. BB-7710 is only about £50 anyway

*recent production, at least. It seems to have been issued in both spline lengths with no model number chainge.

  • Correct, Dura Ace Octalink cranks only work with DA Octalink BBs, not 105 or Ultegra.

  • I think mdcc_tester might be onto something in that the 105 design has changed: e.g. this is very confusing (says v1 but clearly v2 spline: http://www.biketiresdirect.com/product/shimano-105-bb-5500-v1-octalink-bottom-bracket) but other than that I think you're ok with the ultegra one which is definitely v1..

    Sheldon says:
    Octalink ® V1 Spline: 9 speed BB-M952 (XTR), BB-7700 (Dura-Ace), BB-6500 (Ultegra), BB5500 (105)
V1 BB spline grooves 5 mm long, ridges 2.2 mm wide.

That said I run mine on the 7710 track BB, just because the DA road one is unsealed. I assume OP used a 7700 or something else as he said it was italian threaded (7710 is english only because NJS)

  • I have the correct BB for this I'm pretty sure.

Minimal use (like less than 100 miles, if that) - not sure where one of the cups is though.

  • Also, do not mount a crank designed for octalink v1 on a v2 spindle, it will knacker the crank.
