Rest of the build
Marge lite rims
Hope fatsno front hub
Alfine 11spd rear
Husker Du tyres, probably run tubelessChris King 44mm headset
Thomson seatpost, stem and carbon bars
Race face turbine 100mm cranks and raceface bb, still not decided on gearing or front chainring,
shimano alfine rear sprocketShimano 785 brakes
Hope front disc rotor
Shimano center lock rear rotorprobably Fizik Tundra saddle
lizard skin or ergon gripsthe rabbit hole strips on the rims will probably be white, possibly white saddle and grips
white V-L Cunt stickers on the forks
could change my mind and use hope headset and bb
would have liked to do a complete Hope build (except brakes as I already use the Shimanos on the 29er), but they don't yet make an setback seatpost, and feedback on MTBR is that their stems are not quite as good as Thomson

Have you had a bike fit?
-
• #4
yes, one with cycle fit for my road bikes, one with bike whisperer for my mtb
this frame has the same seatpost angle as my 29er, so I can achieve a similar position wrt to the bottom bracket. the top tube is less than 2cm longer than that on my mtb, so will go for a shorter stem than on that bike.
offroad fit is not so critical as you are not locked into one position as you tend to be out of the saddle more and varying posture/stance as you navigate obstacles etc

I agree.
Stem length and head tube angle can be more important though. You need to be able to weight, and unweight the front end easily.
Have you considered a 1 x 10 set-up instead of the alfine?
Not so much for weight saving. But for crisper shifting, a more direct feeling drivetrain, and a modular system.
I set mine up last night. I never bothered dialing it in, as the bike isnt finished. But I was still pleasently surprised by how snappy it was.
Sram TT lever in a paul thumbie mount.
Continuous Gore cabling to the derailuer.
Short cage Sram X0 derailuer.
XTR chain and cassette.Shifting would be a lot better, and when a bit breaks you just replace that bit.

I'd just stick with Hope headset, hubs, seatpost clamp, and BB.
I have some lightly used, yet dirty, Lizard skins charger lock-on grips in white. I'll chuck them in the post if you want them. I could try and get them white again first. They are super grippy.

Looks good. Where are you going to ride it DJ?

The plan is to use it when out with the girlfriend offroading. Slightly more relaxed riding than using the xc 29er. She has a couple of dogs and wants to be able to take them for walks in some boggy areas, hence her buying a fatbike. Also for some long beach walks, and then possibly a trip to the alps in winter time.
Why hub gears? I wanted to try something else out. The frame is even belt drive compatible, which interests me too. The idea of a lower maintenance drive train appeals, plus having had Swinley sand which masquerades as mud destroy a drive train previously, I like the idea of having this as my wet winter trail bike too.
Most accounts of the alfine seem to be good.
Hope are yet to make a setback/layback seatpost, which is probably the main reason for me not wanting to go for a Hope finishing kit.
Yes please re the grips, PM sent.

The belt really takes the work out of maintainance. With no excess oil around, the mud just falls off. As opposed to being mixed with drivechain oil and stuck on, only to be removed with cleaning agents.
You also dont need to worry about powerwashing, or using strong soaps. So long as you keep these away from your hub, bb, and headset bearings.
I just take a hose to my belt drive bike. The shite is far more easy to remove, and I dont need to worry if I've accidently degreased my chain. Win win.
No PM recieved. But I'll dig out the grips tonight. They're in a massive heavy box on the top shelf in the work room. Typical, I've literally just put it back after having it down for my fatty build. Feck it ;)

Interesting - when I looked into this a while back I remember a majority of negative / underwhelming comments from people using the 11 for XC.

mtbr has a few very vocal posters complaining, but more see content with it

It would be nice if it was a great little gearbox.
Still think you should get a Rohloff though ;)

f&f now paid for
just waiting for a couple of quotes for bits and pieces
Tim @ Sideways Cycles has been a huge help so far. I have been clear that some bits and pieces may not be bought from him, but he has been very willing to spend time on phone and emails answering a ton of my fat-noob questions.
gearing is probably going to be 32 front, 23 rear.

Sounds good looking at the alfine range.

it gives me nearly identical coverage to the 29er's gears
29er 21-101 inches, the fatbike 21.4-87.5 inches -

Hope to have a complete bike next week.
