  • Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a Concorde Astore in PDM colours. Purchased a couple of years ago, it has remained woefully underused, and in accordance with the buying and selling regulations imposed by my fiancee, must make way for a recently purchased Merckx. Constructed from Columbus Cromor tubing, with a full Campagnolo Triomphe groupset, it is in excellent condition - and was, until last year, almost unblemished. Unfortunately, an encounter with the pave of Paris Roubaix, left the frame marked (cosmetic only, see picture) and an unusable front wheel. I am sure that this can be retouched, and the wheel will come with the bike as the hub can be salvaged should a purchaser wish to complete the groupset intact. The frame is 56cm square. In my belief, the bike had been hardly used in the 20 or so years prior to my purchase, to the extent that it was almost NOS. I think the price is a realistic £350, and whilst willing to post, would prefer to find a buyer in the London area.

  • I've been looking for this exact frame!
I lost mine in April in a crash which was gutting, never thought I'd find one in this condition again. My groupset's still mint though, would you sell the frameset on its own?

  • Corbey - sorry to hear of your crash.

I must admit to being torn over your offer. Unfortunately, I don't want to split the bike as yet. Cycling home tonight (sorry I've had a beer or two) made me reflect a little about the bike. I reckon it must have been put together circa 1987 (Stephen Roche et al). I was cycling a rattle cannned Peugeot Premiere frame, with a mix of parts, the proudest being a 7 speed alloy block. I couldn't afford this type of bike, and to be honest the ascendancy of Shimano had meant that Campag seemed a company that catered for professionals, or the elite cyclists in my club who might one day invite you to join them on their weekend trip to Bournemouth and back. As the years passed, booze, girlfriends, driving lessons and rent took their toll. Money was OK, but why buy a new road bike when it was all about mountain biking. An occasional glimpse at the comic and the adds for Ribble and Desside cycles whetted the appetite, but there was a lads holiday in Majorca to pay for and why f**king bother when the kids at the evening 10 were turning up in dads car with kit that Lemond was using...

Indurain, Pantani, Ulrich, Armstrong... university, jobs, debt, relationships. A reawakening and a chance to buy something from your youth. To split would be to wrench something apart that has remained constant for a generation. It's a little bit of cycling history, a mediocre bike that you wanted as a kid, but couldn't afford. The chance to be Sean Kelly, Greg Lemond or Stephen Roche in your mind. I'd be sad splitting it...

Sorry this turned out to be a longer answer than I anticipated!

  • I'd be interested in the groupset if you we're to split.

  • No need to apologise, I totally understand where you’re coming from. Bikes like this should never be split, the only reason why I asked was because I was saddened at the thought of losing my own which, similar to yours, had stayed in its original form since ’89 and still rides like a dream – that’s the same age as me and, quite frankly, in a lot better condition.

Like when a pet dies, you can’t just replace it with the same breed and expect nobody to notice. Maybe it’s time for me to move on and start something new...
