A 3/32 chain will not work with a 1/8 chainring or cog, but a 1/8 chain will work with a 3/32 chainring and cog.
Any geared chain will be 3/32 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 speed).
Just buy a 1/8 chain and you'll be fine... and it will probably be the cheapest.

Verbs; thanks. i'm posting this because i'm thinking of getting the omnium cranks. and the rest (chain and cog) is what i already have. so that means i have to AT LEAST get another chain.
will there be "play" if i used the 1/8 chain with the 3/32 cog?
and also i'm currently riding a 52/17 setup. but the stock omnium chainring is 48, if i drop to a 16t rear, rightfully it should be as close as what i am currently riding, (so i'm told). will it feel "too light"?
thanks!

I've run a 3/32 chainring with 1/8 cog and 1/8 chain no problems for quite some time on two different bikes. The "play" on the chainring has been non existant.
I can't comment on the ratio you want to run. I run 49 x 17 and that feels perfect to me.

48/16 is indeed close to 52/17. Just do the division and get 3 versus 3.05 and then multiply by 27 for a rough idea and you will see it is 80GI rather than 82GI.

verbs; thanks!
kerley; i think i might just use the stock chainring and get a new cog. hahaha! thanks!
hi all,
not sure if this is the right place for this but i have a slight query, as below;
Omnium cranks 1/8 sprocket
Phil Wood 3/32 cog
Shimano 9spd chain (quite sure it's 3/32)
will this setup work? or do i HAVE to get a 3/32 sprocket?
thanks people...
