  • I had been a bit tired of going at a v slow speed when riding with my friend, so I decided to build her a bike to, at least, go a little faster!

But it all started by me seeing this: http://www.lfgss.com/thread91495.html
t.o found a frame, which turned out that cycleaddict had tossed.
    http://www.lfgss.com/thread91491.html
I asked, but no further details on it's actual origins came to light.

So what we have is a dinky little Raleigh Arena, a child's racing bike from the late-70's, 80's.
The condition of the frame was fine, paint job not so great. Even though it looks alright in the pic above.

Having accumulated a lot of parts from my previous build. I set about getting what else I needed from people here and from eBay/Amazon/etc.

    Parts Bin:
    Wheels, tubes, tyres
    Shifter
    Pedals
    Brake & gear cable

    LBS:
    Headset
    Seat clamp bolt

    eBay:
    Threaded fork
    Brake and gear cable housing

    LFGSS (thank you!):
Levers, Handlebars, Stem from Gingergrinch - for a beer
Calipers and seat post from nellyrodders

First step really was to get the cranks off. Mushroomed cottered cranks!
I tried, but then delivered it to my friend as she said she had a cheap LBS who could do it. With me nagging, later, took it there. WEEKS later she picked it up and FINALLY took it to Armourtec for a new paint job, sans forks as they were still with me. Oh well, she's going to have to live with black forks for the time being.
Weekend of the 18th of May 2013, she finally picked it up.
22nd of May 2013, I finally get my hands on it, and it is beautiful!

Her choice, but a close match to LFGSS blue I say!

I've got some cranks in the pipeline and then we take it to get the BB!

    Stay tuned...

  • Nice one Mands :) How tall is your friend?

  • you met her :) ...she's my height...

  • Ha! I know who you mean then. Do you reckon it'll be ready in time for Herne Bay?

  • Definitely! ...
    I'll try!!! :)

  • Awesome, I had one of these as my first fixed, and its now being re-kindled as a bike for my GF... with free brakes from Hats, if im not mistaken. Its been a fun bike so far!

  • Very nice!

  • Very nice, is this Brooke's?

  • Yep, don't tell her about the treacle comment ;)

  • I spent a good amount of time trying to unsuccessfully seat the crown race on the ebay forks, then realised the steerer was too short. blah blah.
t.o. seems to have a great supply of chrome forks so hit him up again, so it's in progress there. Chrome is going to look great actually, with this.
Just for funzies, I put the fork on and stem & handlebars. I stuck some wheels on it, seat and seat-post so I could get a pic to send to it's intended owner for excitement and hype.

Oh and cranks are on the way!

  • A set of porteur bars would look nice on there,

  • North road bars

  • Well basically the remit was "cheap" and I got the bars free so.... :)
We can change bits and workshop it later! We/She'd be open to any recommendations from you guys!

So after the cranks, forks and bb, pretty much the only things I need are calipers (ones I have won't work), a chain and some cable housing...

  • flip the bars + this (can't find the english word for it, but with the soap in them)

  • ah.. my vocabulary is enriched once again!

  • Well basically the remit was "cheap" and I got the bars free so.... :)

In that case I may have the right bar/stem that'll look rather smart on that bike, you just gotta let me know how it fit with the current set-up so i can get the right stem length.

  • Well that would be delightful. I'll get it complete and update you all...

  • how's it going? I saw on another thread you might be having bottom bracket problems...

  • (re-tap? threadless? keep original cups and get a new axle?)

  • It's on hold as I'm in Guatemala Belize and Mexico.
Cranks are in the post hopefully and then we go for the BB!

  • Double post

  • You can't be in all three countries at once...

  • she can be if she made enemies in mexico!

  • We got some vintage cranks...
46T, 170mm, heavy steel should last forever!
Exactly the same as the ones off my 80's Peugeot.

    Thx Mr Bump
