Had a quick go with some Autosol and now have some very shiny forks! Looks amazing, will need to pick out the crud from the detailing in the top to get it perfect..
Cranks need more than just polish though - any ideas on the best method to get them shining?
nice job on the forks and stem.
to get shiny cranks you need to strip them from the old dulled anodizing.
this is actually quite easy with caustic soda as used as drain cleaner.
it will propably take the logos off to so might not be worth it though. -

cool thanks for the tip - does that bypass the need for any sandpaper?
It would be a shame to lose the Moser bits.. but the rest of the bike will be gleaming and they will probably look shonky without any work on them

slowly making progress, took the frame off to see Mario on Monday, and is now waiting for me to collect. I have removed the anodizing using caustic soda (thanks for the tip drøn!) and polished the cranks up.
Annoyingly though it's left this weird black pitting in the place where there were marks and scuffs which I'm struggling to get out. not noticeable from a normal distance, but if you look closely it isn't great..

Progress! Went to see Mario Vaz today and got back a freshly painted BEAUTY! Crap photos for now - its dark and i'm sleepy
Paint job is overall very good - a couple of minor bits here and there are slightly off (i mean really small - hardly noticable) but by far 1000000x better than I ever could do, so not complaining. Reasonably priced too at £75.
Question: My forks are too long for my headset (see photo) do I:
a) buy spacers?
b) cut down my fork? -
• #10
Paint job looks amazing! I say cut it down,if it fits you right, it will fit the frame even better! Also, if you are not sure of cutting it yourself, take it to someone, it's worth the extra couple of moneyz!
EDIT: work out the stack height of the headset you ultimately want to fit before cutting!

Or just put a spacer in there.
Looks nice btw -
• #12
I'd say spacer.
-
• #13
found a spacer! Parts flooded in at the last minute, so got a build together but not 100% complete yet - when is it ever 'finished'?!
Got the cranks installed first:
Then ALOT of autosol got some old pedals back to life.. new cages and straps:
Also pretty happy with the clearances too.. Front forks are gappy - but looks OK for a road frame!

Beautiful, exactly how a conversion should be done.

Congrats dude! I'm glad you bought it! This frame deserved to be treated like this!

A (shiny) Campagnolo aero seatpost, maybe?
-
• #18
Nice! Looks like heavy gearing?

So I'm new here and still learning how things are done about bicycles, so I've got a question: are those 'moser' signs painted or are those stickers?
-
• #20
stickers, then clear coat over. I assume.
-
• #21
Cheers guys. 52/16 isn't perfect for the Surrey hills but it works at the moment - I might gear down after i've broken it in a bit
Yep decals were eBay stickers and Mario applied the clear coat over the top.

I had great hopes for this and got all nazi about paint rather than powdergloop, congrats, it looks great! There's nowt wrong with your seatpin, but the valve caps are a disgrace.
Just a shame yours knees will shortly explode.....

Beautiful build. But that gear's definitely more Herne Hill than Surrey Hill!
-

+1. 52/19, spin to win. quick question though, did mario give you any advice on curing that paint? would be a shame to not let it cure enough for it then to flake off while looking at it..

Thanks! I'm in love with this build.. Dust caps are off, much better!
Mario didn't give me any tips on the paint apart from not to scrape it all off on his railings! Great chap though, it's a solid job
First "serious" project - So far I've built up 3 bikes using bits I've nicked off various bikes in the garage, and now feel like it's time to build something with a little more care.. Hopefully I can post up regularly with how it's getting on but my REAL motivation for posting here is to ask for your advice and help with doing the best job I can, really want to restore it back to it's former glory.
I just received a beautiful Moser Super Prestige frame from Hungary (bought from Aron just recently on here). So the frame has come without any paint and revealing a flawless frame, with chromed dropouts and chain stay. drooooool.
The forks are nicely chromed too and everywhere are little flourishes from Mr Moser himself, I love it already. Aron told me that when he bought it it looked like this: http://www.ebay.it/itm/Vintage-Moser-Super-Prestige-Campagnolo-Universal-/271186326080?pt=Biciclette&hash=item3f23f6f240&_uhb=1#ht_1622wt_1186
So I am aiming to get the paint and decals as close to that as possible. Any recommendations of where to get her painted in London? I've heard Armourtex are good - or Mario something - but somewhere that can mount the decals too?
Here are some crap snaps, she's now sitting in my room so I can oggle at her from my desk!
