Different Lock Rings?

Posted on
  • I have just acquired a new set of wheels with Novatec hubs. I tried to install a cog and lock ring from my other set of wheels however the lock ring doesnt fit?

I thought lock rings were universal?

I have compared the thread on my Miche hub and spacing seems to be slightly wider than the Novatec's which could be the issue?

    Any thoughts appreciated...

  • I thought this might be the first time I would say UTFS* but no, lockrings are not universal, there are 2 types (plus a 3rd one which is very rare so not worth worrying about.) There is ISO and there is Campag.

    Sheldon is your friend, here.

*I have had exactly the same problem in the past, and have posted the same question here, so who am I to talk.

  • many thanks for your response... i did spend some time searching the forum but didn't see an answer... hopefully this will assist others..

  • cheers... i need to be more thorough with my searches...

the reviews are funny, lots of people saying it doesnt work, that dont realise its a different thread

it is good that it has so many tool notches because the quality isnt so good but you can damage it a few times and it keeps working!,the rear side is sometimes rough and needs smoothing

  • To be fair, sellers of lockrings need to stress that there are 2 common sizes depending on their brand of hubs. It is not obvious on many websites unless you know what you are looking for. And the guy who built my wheels, an excellent builder otherwise, didn't know this either. But I guess he isn't asked to build many fixie wheels up here.
