what's with the holes? DIY cable routing? would love to but no money sadly

The holes either side of the clamp are original.

When I bought them, a previous owner had drilled the ends, but they were off-centre, too high and too small: the cable routing was tight causing drag.

I re-drilled and elongated the holes for smoother brake operation.
