I had a flared head tube from one of the headset cups being hammered in at an angle (my fault). I just tightened it up and rode it. Cannot say I would recommend it and I suspect the head tube would crack easily as the metal is stressed.

I think your query is with the bike shop that did the original 'work' on the headset.
Name and shame if it turns out they messed it up and ruined the frame.

Cheers for the replies. I'm still riding it but looks like i'll be looking for another frame.
It was a shop in Glasgow that serviced it for me... Not sure if it was their fault or the frame had it coming... -

they should have at least told you even if it wasn't their fault, no? If they didn't say anything go and speak to them-they will most likely fess up.

I found some headsets are marginally smaller dia (replaced a Stronglight with Ofmega and it slid straight in and barely stayed in.... if it's flared it's pretty fucked though.

unfortunately i picked up the frame from the shop and got on a train to London! rode it to the station and it seemed ok. it wasnt till i got off the train and started riding it here that i noticed the slack headset. pretty annoyed as im relying on this bike to get about..

what shop was it? Give them a ring-I'm pretty sure the mechanic will be sheepish enough to fess up, if they had noticed a pre-existing problem they would have made a point of telling you so you knew it wasn't their fault.
just got my bike back from the shop after having the headset serviced. Noticed a lot of play and looks like the cups are now very loose and won't stay in place. Took it into another shop and the guy thinks the headtube is flared. Meaning the frsme is fucked! Also said it's very unlikely just to be a headset problem. Is it worth pulling the thing apart and trying new cups/headset or is the frame done for? And how dodgy is it riding about with my headset tightened up and the cups not fitting quite right?
Cheers,
Steven
