my mate is 1/2 block away

Serious indeed. It's weird watching this on the news, knowing it's literally just 1/2 a block away. The ambulances are stacked up outside our hotel. Horrible.

The footage on BBC News 24 and Sky news is horrific and very graphic.

Just in Boston right now, I went past it pretty much the time it happened. I'm now at the airport hoping to get home.
News broke as I got out of the subway, people seemed shocked, but fairly calm

have a friend there who was running the marathon... thankfully she's ok

Reports say there were 2 bombs that went off about 2 hours after the first runners across the line so at around the time when the 'good / half decent amateur' runners were coming in. There was also a smaller 3rd explosion, which was police blowing up a suspect package in the vicinity.
So far, 2 reported dead and 22 injured, including many amongst those seriously injured, severed limbs for example.
Really horrific stuff.

I realise this is a horrendous tragic event which is also likely to have some unpleasant implications other that the unfortunate people who have suffered directly.
But I think we need to keep things in perspective, things like this are happening pretty much DAILY in Iraq, for example today 30 people died from car bombs and hundreds were injured. So I think some moderation of shock and awe in in order. The media is a divisive hate machine. I can imagine the news is going to be covering this story non stop for the next few weeks, to what end? To fill people with fear, suspicion and hatred.

DFP - please be careful with that alternative view, it seems they're hugely unpopular on the forum these days.
Besides, things like this do happen all over the world every day but this thread is about it happening in Boston at the Boston Marathon.

I think DFP has raised a very fair point. I felt similar after the bombings in the UK.

James, it's not remotely like you to be contrary. Seriously though, let's see how it's reported on over the coming days - as long as there isn't a script being written for the film as we type my cynicism remains fairly unruffled.
More intrigued to know who and why?

Script already written and filmed innit? Four Lions transposed to Boston.

I was thinking that, but there is some clues hinting at domestic anti government group, because of the date. "Patriots Day" in Boston, "Tax Day" across the US. Also pretty much the aniversary of the Waco Siege and Oklahoma Bombing.
Americans are very much in a period of unrest and resentment towards the Government.

Indeed, I seem to recall a similar reaction after the pipe bomb at the Atlanta Olympics, with some Jordanian dragged off a plane at Heathrow, only to find it was an internal US job.
Were any of the bombers dressed as Honey Monsters (or possibly Wookies)?

Bet those people who run marathons in suits of armour are looking pretty smug right now.
