I think that may be wrong, as sunset on Thursday is apparenty at 7:39, so it will be dark at 8.

But there are floodlights now, just wasn't sure if they were up and running yet

The floodlights aren't up yet.

The session will be running on Thursday. The track will be open for warm-up from about 6pm then we'll start the derny element of the sessions whenever the volunteer drivers can get there from work. It might mean we only get two 20 minute sessions behind the derny, but is a good way to ease yourself into it.

My first ever Derny training last night and it was fun! Not sure why but there was a lot of twitcy riders initially but it seemed to settle down after a while.
Found its much easier being near the front than the back.
Seemed to be going fast though -

Unfortunately we won't be allowed to use the Dernys when the flood lights are on - something about upsetting the neighbours :-( go figure! -

We need electric dernys.....
-

The 'problem' with electric powered dernys is that electric motors are naturally very torquey, unlike the traditional dernys, these won't have a smooth acceleration unless they have an complex gearing set up and very accurate throttle control, a lot of variables in the equation, not saying it can't be done though

Does anyone know when derny training starts this year?
-

I don't think there is going to be a weekly Thursday derny session anymore. I know at the end of last season there was frustration at the lack of pacers that made them rethink the entire thing. IIRC one of the coaches was telling me the other day that dernys will be brought out when there is specific training to be done for upcoming derny races.

crap :(
I was looking forward to that.Any idea what the 'advanced training' sessions that are scheduled from the 3rd are?
Same deal as Sunday? -
• #13
Ah thats a shame! Derny was my favourite training session
-

Part of the deal with local residents to get consent to installing lights was that derny use would be limited to certain hours (to reduce noise) and that also became a limiting factor.
As I said up there ^^^, I think the Thursday sessions are going to be training sessions tailored specifically to upcoming races. Some will be derny, some may be madison, etc. I may be wrong, but that is my sense.
I was looking forward to the derny sessions too :(

What a shame, I loved hanging onto the back of a buzzing derny, breathing through my arse on a regular basis.

Thursday
Advanced Training
Running from 3rd April 2014 to 25th September 2014 19:00 to 21:00. These are the most advanced sessions on the weekly schedule, designed for riders training to compete in national series and national championships events. You will need to complete a race accreditation before joining this session.
19:00 - 21:00
Race accreditation needed Advanced Track Training
Adults: £7, Youth £3 British Cycling members (Silver or Gold) only due to insurance. You must have your own bike or have hired one for the season, no hire bikes. Elements of these sessions will be paced by Dernys. We will have guest coaches most weeks and will plan the sessions around important upcoming events. You will need to show your race accreditation card when you sign on for the session. -

Details of the content of Thursday Advanced Training sessions are still being worked on. We hope to be able to use one derny or more most weeks for specific training exercises. One of the problems faced last year was that there were weeks when only one derny was available and it's not possible to run a sensible/safe 'derny training' evening with one derny and 25+ riders.

Thanks for clarifying

I got up there whenever I could, other commitments permitting, but part of the trouble was that the drivers sometimes felt that they were being taken for granted and it was just assumed that they would turn up. With a little more organisation or rostering it would have been fine I'm sure. I quite enjoyed ripping the legs off of some of you so I for one will miss it :-) btw, if I hadn't seen this thread then I would not have known that the Thursday derny sessions had stopped!

I think the plan will be that if dernys turn up then it will be possible to structure a session around this, but if only one turns up, there will be a different structure to the session. What we want to avoid is advertising a regular derny session only for riders to be disappointed or annoyed that they aren't getting what they paid for.

Don't think they have stopped
Spoke to someone at race accreditation who thought it still was on.
Website shows it and this statementNew for 2014 we have revamped the old thursday derny sessions to create these advanced sessions. Dernys will still be used where they add something to the session, but the format will be a little different.
These are the most advanced sessions on the weekly schedule, designed for riders training to compete in national series and national championships events. You will need to complete a race accreditation before joining this session and must have your own bike. All riders must be British Cycling members (Silver or Gold).
We will have guest coaches most weeks and will plan the sessions around important upcoming events at Herne Hill Velodrome as well as national series events and national championships (including youth and masters). The sessions will be designed to help hone your speed, power and technique ready for major races, you should come to the sessions fairly fit already.
Will go tomorrow night to confirm
Is rain fatal to a derny? -

As I understand it, the Thursday sessions are now structured around upcoming races. So if the next event is the Derny Fest, for example, then the Thursday session before will likely be dernys. But it is not chasing a motorbike every Thursday as it was. Also, there are now limitations on hours the dernys can be used (to curtail noise), limitations that were put in place to get planning permission for the installation of lights. If any of that makes sense.

This is a mixed session with some exercises involving a derny or dernys and some not. Dernys are being used most weeks as they are a very helpful advanced training aid even if there's no derny fest coming up.

confirmed deny training does happen and is awesome.
Multiple Denys on the track going at different paces.
Fast or Ultra fast - none slow.Rained a little but didn't stop them, probably effected my asthma more.
Guest coach next week, some bigwig from British cycling.
Should be a good one.
It says on the Herne Hill calendar the above starts this thurs? Is this true?
7-9?
