SS to FG

  • Let me first say, I am a numpty when it comes to mechanics ... hence what is to follow!

I have a standard 2012 Charge Plug with the flip-flop rear wheel which is currently a SS. I want to convert this to FG. Exactly what do I need to do this? Ideally I'll stick to 16 tooth on the back so I assume chain length remains the same?

    • So do I just need a rear cog? If so, any recommendations?
    • Do I need a locking ring, or would I not need this on the Plug?
    • What tools do I need (apart from myself)?

    Cheers in advance :)

  • Right, is it a flip flop hub? So does it have a thread on the other side with a reverse thread next to it for the lockring?

You'll just need the cog, a lockring that'll fit the hub, chainwhip for putting the cog on and a lockring tool to secure the lockring.

Just get a decent cog, I use whatever branded ones but you can go fancy if you want.

  • Hey there Mate

    You'll need:
    The cog
    A lockring
And either a Lockwip or a chainwip and Lockring tool.
If you need to adjust the chain length you'll need a chain breaker.
Remember lockring a are reverse threaded so screw it on the opposite way.

  • What he said ^^

  • Given what you've said, purchase the equipment you need and take it to a bike shop or get someone(on here) who knows what they're doing to walk you through it.

  • If you are in North London I don't mind helping for m&ms..

  • If you're around west/northwest I don't mind helping out.

  • Cheers guys - great help.

Yes it's a flip flop hub.

I'm in SE London (Beckenham) so I'll probably head down to Deen's on the High St. and ask him to show me the ropes (unless one of LFGSS members are in this area).

  • Best bet is getting a bike shop to put it on and tighten it. You don't want a loose sprocket stripping the threads on your hub.

They shoulf do it for nothing if you buy the sporcket and lockring from them.

    I agree with this.

I own a Charge Plug which I have ridden in both SS and FG "mode".

If you buy a chainwhip, make sure you get the right type to fit your rear cog (I made this mistake). Also some chainwhips have a lockring tool included.
