Removing BB from vintage steel frame

Posted on
  • I have been offered a beautiful and rare vintage steel frame from approx. mid-70ies through the internet, i.e. I cannot view it in real life.

It comes with bottom bracket, stem and seatpost - the seller (who inherited the frame) do not know when the parts were mounted.

Being a relatively new 'bike mechanic' my question is whether I can expect to be able to remove these parts, especially the bottom bracket?

(The frame seems in good shape with no rust.)

I would appreciate your comments and experience!

  • My main concern is that the bottom bracket is 'grown' together with the frame.
Of cource there could be issues related to the bottom bracket model, tools etc., but I expect to be able to solve that part of the equation.

  • This probably comes down to how much it's been left outside and how well greased it was when it was put together. Only one way to find out I reckon!

  • only real difference is the bb wont be a sealed unit. all very intuitive though

  • Check the seat post isn't stuck fast.
I bought a 'bargain' frame, unseen, and spent days and days trying to get a stuck seat post out

you is right! A stuck seatpost can be the ultimate misery at least with old stuck BB's you can cut the stuck chainset off with an angle grinder and usually use the large hammer and punch technique to get the old BB out

How van I prevent to destroy the thread using this method?

By the way, I have bought the frame, will receive it today.

Not sure what you need? would advide you if the seatpost is stuck and the right height for you, just leave it alone and ride as is! if you dick around with mods on a seatpost remember you're balls and Ahole are in grave danger if it fails!

On the BB side if its old, possibly with a cottered crank I would just borrow an angle grinder (or a decent hacksaw) and cut the bastard off! then just use a centre punch and the biggest hammer u got to whack the BB round ..and off
