Converting 8 to 9 speed campagnolo

Posted on
  • I want to convert my rearwheel from a 8 speed to a 9 speed. I know I can't put a 9 speed cassette on a 8 speed wheel. But can I replace the campagnolo 8 speed body with a 9 speed body? And how is that possible? Do I need extra tools?

  • Need more info on what hub you have on the rear.

  • I have an Athena 8 speed hub on the rear, and I want to place an athena 9 speed body on it.

  • My understanding is that you can swap the freehub from other Campagnolo hubs with the same design in terms of axle and body shape. Do you already have the replacement freehub? I suspect it will be difficult to find if not.

  • Yes, apparently you'd have to get a freehub from a Mirage/Veloce/Centaur/Athena 9/10 speed. Depening on budget, you might be best off getting a replacement wheel from somewhere

Those sort of hubs are rare as not been manufactured for quite a while now.

  • I have a 9 speed wheel laying around, and an 8 speed wheel. The 9 speed wheel is in a very bad condition, but the shifting parts are still in a very good condition. So that's why i wanted to put the 9 speed cassette on my 8 speed wheel.
Thanks for the info so far! And does somebody knows how to swap it? Do I need extra tools?

  • I think it's pretty easy to swap. Have you tried? Take the cassette off and undo the axle locknuts.

  • That sounds very easy. Thanks for the info butters! I will try it soon.

  • Afaik you will need to swap the axle too as the freehubs have different bearings, but from what I recall the axle and freehub combo should be swappable.
