Spin class

What exactly goes on in spin class? I always figured it was a load of middle aged women on cycling machines?

At risk of sounding sarcastic....use your bike more. Seriously, cycling is completely linear, more you do, better / stronger you get.
Exercise bike might help

Yeah im just pretty out of shape after not being on my bike much since a knee injury in november, plus I get free gym membership through work so I figured it wouldnt hurt to go there a few times a week as well as cycling.

I was being facetious. Spin class is usually anaerobic cycling (fixed too)

Spin class seems to be the winning answer, had a few people on facebook tell me the same.

one climb of highgate hill followed by a pint in the flaskrepeat till you die of exhaustion or alcohol poisoning, will get you fit... just take a look at all those fine muscular bodies at norths drinks .... thats how they all did it

of the golden rule of 4, squats and deadlifts will do your legs and core/back to a certain extent. youtube them to see how they are performed, and ask someone to help you get the technique down whilst in the gym..bad form will likely lead to imbalances and injuries.
apart from the obvious of riding more, some crossfit like swimming or yoga if they do classes can't hurt.

according to Google Maps it will take me 20 hours to cycle from my house in Manchester to Highgate Hill. I reckon I would be pretty fit and healthy after a few of those trips.

cheers, yeah I need to work on core/back muscles. I noticed after not being on my bike for more than 5 minutes for a month or two that my back was starting to hurt if I did spend a decent amount of time on the bike.
I knew it wasnt my riding position because I was fine riding the bike set up the exact same way before I had some time off.

deadlifts / squats as already said as well as leg press and the always ALWAYS fun calf raises should do your lower body just fine. You can also add in some leg raises for thighs too.
If you're supplementing the gym with cycling though, keep the weight low and the reps up. Dont get sucked into macho'ing out at the gym or youll find all that extra power/weight is just bogging you down on the bike

Quit gym, ride bike. Rinse. Repeat.
Since it's too late lmfgtfy...

I dont think there is any danger of that.
I'm a scrawny vegan guy with no weight on me.

you didn't mention that you were in manchester
why not join the velodrome and get cycling coaching from real pro's !better than sitting watching some 78 year olds bum in the spin class

I'll look in to it, I know a few people who have said they are interested in heading down the veledrome.

You'll lose roughly 8% musclemass per decade past your thirties (allegedly, no citation given), so it's a good idea to incorporate some gym work in order to maintain lean mass.
In terms of helping your cycling then the conclusion seems to be that riding your bike helps more than time in the gym- although if you are training for short, explosive efforts I would think that gym time would start to help.

laps of swains > gym class
In a moment of madness I went and joined a gym.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a website or anything that details some good cycling specific exercises?
Looking to build up my stamina more than anything, I would like to be fit/strong/healthy enough to spend more than 2 hours on my bike before I feeling like I'm going to die
cheers,
