Wanted: Cheapest SLR possible!

  • Like the title says, not bothered about condition, colour etc because I'm going to strip it, I just want something cheap. The only constraint is the covering can't be leather even though its being stipped because i'm vegan.

  • I have a damaged SLR (135g - snapped bit = around 130g now), rails snapped off the saddle. You can wrap some electrical tape around and ride it. Carbon fibre, titanium and leather (I think, not sure if it is). Yours for a beer.

  • sorry to hijack but would love it if there was another going about?

james 1234's stripping service is calling

  • Hmmm, that's a great offer but I think I'd rather pay a bit extra for the piece of mind, thanks anyway though!

  • kudos to ltc's upheld morals, much respect.

if it's ok with all parties involved i'd take the saddle and keep an eye for one that is more suitable for you

  • That works for me!

  • Ebay floods with them

  • Buy one of the already-stripped, old 125g models. Mine cost me under £30 I think.

  • I'm having trouble finding anything super cheap on eBay, mostly going for for over £30, if anybody has any links that'd be great too!

  • I've got one of the older gel flow SLR's, minor scuffage on pic as you can see but that wont matter if you're stripping it obviously.

where are you based? if in londons famous london i can deliver to your door for 25 quid today or tomorrow if anyone's interested. PM me if you are to arrange time and place. I can't really be bothered with postage.

  • I'm not London based unfortunately, if its definitely not leather I'd be happy to sort you out with a bit extra for postage and a beer!

  • To be honest I don't know if its leather or not, must admit to my totally untrained eye it looks more likely to be leather than not, is there any way of telling for sure? I mean its definately not moo-ing, or neighing, I guess with recent scandals it could be horse, dog or anything really. Sorry thats not very helpful is it.

Would still prefer to not bother posting as I've been having a ball ache with post recently, I'm still waiting for a 1st class letter sent last friday grrrr.

So at the risk of your poor thread being hijacked again anyone londoners want it? If no one is then I'll arrange to send it up to you, assuming we can get clarifications of it origins, alas its a bit late for it to be returned to the wild I think.

  • hmm annoyingly I can't find any exact matches to the one i have from a basic google search, i got it 2nd hand myself so dont know what year it is.

and the selle italia website does'nt seem to have any archive info, so I've just emailed them a picture and asked them.

God knows if they'll reply or the timescales involved if they do, but we'll see.

I was brought up a veggie (not anymore) so I admire your principles but even a non leather one is likely to have a glue made from horse isn't it? I've no idea if they still use horse for glue but I imagine you've got to check the history of nearly everything, committed work! And maybe now lots of horse is in the UK food chain maybe new saddles don't contain horse as they've priuced themsleves out of the glue market!

  • I'm not too sure how to tell to be honest! Most of the gel flow ones I've looked at seem to be synthetic, I don't know if that's just a coincidence. To be totally honest mate I'd rather know for certain! Regarding the horse in the glue thing, that could well be true!

  • ok no worries, if either of us get no better offers and I hear back from Selle Italia confirming its all clear we can revisit maybe, good luck.

  • Sounds good to me mate!

  • Hey ltc,

fair play to Selle Italia I got an email back this morning, I am impressed. Here's a copy&paste of the reply.

    Hi Dan,
Yes the early SLR production (like yours) was in Black genuine Calf Leather.
Now a days because of white color (shows more natural imperfection) and because of weight issue many models has changed to Lorica or Microfiber that are 100% synthetic.

    Thanks and kind regards

    Paolo Simionato Sales Manager

So I'm afraid mine is a leather one and won't be suitable for you, but at least you know the newer ones are 100% synthetic.

Good luck on the continued search.

  • Cheers mate, that's really helpful!
