For Sale: Campagnolo C-Record Headset

Posted on
  • Hi there,

I'm selling this chrome plated alloy Campagnolo C-Record headset from the 80s/ early 90s. I got it with a Diamant racing frame that I bought recently but changed it for my old headset. As you can see on the photos, the headset is in a pretty good condition, there are just two scratches on the upper cup and one on the locknut.

I tried to find headsets of the same kind in a comparable condition to get to a fair price and have decided to ask for (80GBP) [now:] 55GBP after having checked ebay and other sites (where prices vary quite a lot). I found a thread on the forum where a C-Record headset was offered for 105GBP which (in my opinion) was in a worse condition than the one I have, so I hope this price is fair.

I'm in the Netherlands right now so I could post from here; or, I'll be in London at the end of next week so we could also arrange picking the headset up then.

Please let me know about questions..
    Thanks

  • price drop: 70 pounds

  • Seems a bit over priced.. Think this is a c record era athena or similar.
The one that was £105 was probably record with the holes in the lower cup.
Have you got pictures of the bearing surfaces?
    I would say £50ish.
I got a chorus one for £40 something.

  • I should have one of these which I paid about £40-50 in excellent condition

I have seen NOS one for £80 on ebay I think...

  • thanks for the advice.. this is the thread of the headset i mentioned; but i'm pretty sure that this was incredibly overpriced if you'd look for around 50£.. http://www.lfgss.com/thread75557.html

    alright, so let's say 55£.

  • Going on my own headsets Athena and the like have Athena written on them and C-Record just Campag...

  • you guys should know, were the c-record pista ones the same as other c record headsets?
I am asking as the stack height is quite big on that one

  • Nope, that's athena,c-record look exactly the same once installed, the only visible difference is the holes in the upper fixed cup sleeve as sdw said.

  • Pista ones had a lower stack height for sure... check Velobase.

  • i was looking at references like this: http://stolengoat.com/product/campagnolo-chorus-headset-c-record-era/ no holes, "c-record"

i thought that it didn't make sense to have holes in an alloy part as they would only make a minimal weight difference, but then i checked velobase: http://www.velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=05bd7218-e43a-45fd-ae23-794e5f4666d0&Enum=111

  • i measured the stack height and it's about 43mm.

  • actually, it's 42mm measured

  • How do you measure stack height? Honest and maybe daft question...

    From Velobase
"Pista headset uses same bearings, but has a stack of 38.5mm"

  • ah yeah, same bearings but 3.5mm lower. thanks!

  • ^^beat me

  • Thanks!

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no Pista version of the C-rec headset right?
Like the bracket - they were interchangeable pista/strada, no?
Or was that talk about the stack height of the older pista headsets?!

    Have a free bump!

  • yes there is, its lower by a fraction apparently.

  • Dibs subject to questions on PM following

  • Hi there,

Please let me know about questions..
    Thanks

If it's still available let me know a price in euro...

  • As this thread comes up high in google searches I think it's a good idea to clear up some misinformation presented in this thread.

C record headsets are easy to tell apart from Chorus and Athena headsets of the same era, even when installed. C-Record doesn't have the chamfer/edge. See image.

  • Ive wondered about this before, and I see what you mean about the chamfered edge but then I came across a couple of things;

    No.1
    http://www.pedalpedlar.co.uk/collections/headsets/products/campagnolo-c-record-vintage-1-threaded-headset
Did they make Chorus/Athena headsets with drilled upper cups? Or have they listed this incorrectly?

    No2.
I have a Campagnolo headset on a Raleigh track bike from the 80's that has a stack height of exactly 38.5mm with chamfered edges and as far as I can find out Chorus/Athena headsets have a larger stack height.

I haven't yet taken my headset apart to see if the top cup is drilled (it will happen tomorrow) but its a bit of a head scratcher.

Anyway let me know what you think :)

  • I got the stack height wrong, its actually 42mm. However I took it off the frame and it has a drilled top cup.
