  • Need thoughts, advice etc...

    Don't quit, smoking's cool.

  • .

  • Tried the Allan Carr book? My GF gave up using it, 9 months in now - and I swear I though she would be buried chuffing on a nail - I mean, maaaaan....she lurved the fags

I used Nicotinell for a while, then willpower (7 years in April) - I think elec cigs are a bad idea because they perpetuate the hand to mouth thing - best go with other NRT

    Other opinions are available though

  • read the book, plenty of times....
    tried patches, nicotinell etc..

  • htfu?

  • I read a really good book once on how to give up smoking. It was totally non patronising, ie it didn't say much about how much damage to your body smoking does. Instead it took a different approach. It stated that nicotine actually cons you into wanting it by making you think that it helps to relieve stress, when that very same stress is caused by the nicotine in the first place, ie the nicotine withdrawal.

Think about it. Nicotine actually does cause a stressful withdrawal which is then relieved by taking more nicotine which in turn causes withdrawal stress again, like a vicious circle. Withdrawal stress though eventually goes away when you stop smoking for long enough. I hope that helps.

  • htfu?

    stfu :)

  • smoke the f up?

  • Stop smoking.
    That's all
    Keep trying.
Every time you decide to stop
Remember how shit you felt about
    That first cigarette
That stopped you giving up last time

  • I know I'm smoking again, but... Patches + inhalator = the most painless method IME

  • bonus of electro-fags? I saw someone smoking one on a scooter yesterday.

  • plus you can get glowing blue LED ended ones so you can smoke AND look like you're in Daft Punk at the same time

  • I quit 10 years ago now, just went cold turkey. The Mrs, however, still smokes having quit and then started again. She's trying the electronic fags but they dont seem to help that much. She says they dont really give the same "hit" as regular fags and just leave her wanting a proper smoke anyway. Might be different for others.

Used them for about 3 months last summer. Much much better on your pocket and much easier to carry round than a pouch of baccy and rizla's. Reckon 1 filter would probably last you a couple of days Murts.

Whether they're actually all that much better for you physically though, is still to be seen I reckon. At the end of the day you're still breathing in vaporised chemicals

  • When I quit it was done by breaking habits.
I stopped my Fag routine, jazzed up the times I smoked. No smoke when I for to work, went out at half 10 for ny first, stopped lunch time ones, etc.
Got down to 3-5 a day then stopped.
Itsted a few years but when my dad died I started again.
Only smoke a few a day and if I don't have any for a couple of weeks Im Fine with it.
    I just enjoy smoking.

  • I return to smoking every now and again. Just done a 2 month stint. As soon as my fitness feels affected I get frustrated and quit. Like now. I find the gum takes the edge off while be totally unlike smoking.

My mum quit with the electronic jobbies a couple of years ago.....and shes still on them today.

Well nicotine is a toxin. So it cant be great.

The feeling as the tar leaves your lungs is pretty nice. But after that why quit the leccy cigs?

  • Everything's a toxin, innit - Just depends on dose.

    Even homeopathic remedies are toxins.

If you drink a trillion tonnes of the stuff.

But nicotine on its own isn't so bad, and easily the lesser of two evils.

This. Just stop. If you crack, you crack, just stop again after.

For me the important thing was after I fell off the wagon and had one when I was out drunk, I quit again the next morning rather than just beginning again and buying another 20.

I smoked 1 a month (always when drunk) for a year then kicked it completely.

(Completely-ish - I might have one a year now - still when drunk).

  • thread needs more facebook style affirmation posters

    You can do it

  • I got sick of the feeling of having 1 lung when cycling, so bought one of the electronic cigarettes. I was glued to it for about 3 weeks as it didn't give the same kind of satisfaction as a real cig. But then I just kind of quit. Without having to take a 5 min break and go outside to smoke, my routine was broken, I wouldn't look forward to the next time I can sneak off. I stopped smoking the electric one at work, then it was only while drinking, and pretty quickly I managed to knock that on the head too. I never really struggled with cravings or anything during the process either.

Well, well nicotine is a poison even in small amounts. So its not really the same thing.

Its not like those crazy figures you get for relatively harmless stuff. 'we fed a 400g rat 200g of sawdust and it died. Therefore we extrapolated that 40kg of sawdust is lethal if consumed by a 80kg adult human etc....'

I'd say inhaling vapour, is infinitly better than inhaling particulate smoke. So its gotta be an improvement.

  • Nicotine's pretty much up there with some of the worse toxins - hardens and tightens blood vessels it comes in contact with, greatly raises your blood pressure, is probably the leading cause of strokes in long-term smokers and increases the risk of heart attacks.

Can't remember the exact ins and outs of it all - but it's not pretty.

^Good enough reasons to just knock it on the head again Murts?

  • I quite like the electric cigarette as an alternative, it's wouldn't help me quit at all though
