forgive my ignorance here but what is the difference between studio monitors / speakers and regular loudspeakers ?

Studio monitors have in-built amps to try and match amp to speaker and make the frequency response as flat and true as possible. 'Active' as opposed to 'passive', like hi-fi speakers.

ooof .... sounds like i've got some reading to do !

You'll also find different kind of connections on the back of active speakers. XLR, occasionally TRS sockets, which have an extra element to reduce noise. All part of the rich audiophile tapestry.
These are damn nice speakers. York uni had some when I was there and I preferred them to their Genelecs. I've got some Tannoy Reveals, nowhere near as good.

Thanks Skully.
Just to throw in a touch of detail for you Dicki, and maybe cut down on the reading, studio monitors are designed to be revealing, they should give a true image of what your listening to. They have the flattest response possible across the whole sound spectrum and are very sensitive so you can hear everything you're trying to hear, without colour. This is so (in most cases) in a studio, when producing sound for music, broadcast or whatever, you can be sure you are getting a good representation of what people are going to be listening to on all their different kinds of headphones/speakers/shitty TVs/multi-million pound hifi systems.
Hifi speakers can be like that to an extent, but as a general rule, they hide the defects and are designed to be complimentary to everything that goes through them.
These monitors are active and are bi-amplified which means there is two amplifiers built into each speaker, one for the tweeter, and one for the woofer. That certainly tends to be the trend with monitors, but isn't true of all.
And XLR's and TRS jacks are forms of balanced connections, which come in other forms as well. Think of them like an upgraded version of the phono leads that go from your stereo separates to the amp. These ones help to cancel out noise and interference though.
