matched vs non matched rims

  • Does machining make much of a difference?

If I bought non machined and ran a brake would they turn deathtrap in the rain?

Considering a pair of varnos wheels not sure to go 40mm non machined or 30 machined, do they come with a black braking surface?

    Cheers

  • They have a breaking surface, it's just painted over.

  • Braking on non-machined rims is fine, if they aren't. They won't perform as well, for a bit.

  • Depends on the rims. Sometimes variations on a rim designed for brakes don't have a machined braking surface but are still strong enough to take the load on them. Some rims are designed specifically not to be used with rim brakes and don't have strong enough side walls.

  • Varno 40mm at Weinman Pegasus and fine to brake on.
Btw from the Titile of the thread I was expected the HHSB debate.

  • Matched?

Machined rims are grooved and grip braking pads. Non machined are smooth and provide less friction and less braking force. If you're running a brake, opt for machined rims. Non machined will screatch and squeel too.

  • been running mismatched staggered... come to think of it, I haven't owned a set of matching wheels or tires since most have been purchased second hand

    Not all marines rims do,
Some just feature a raised unpainted braking surface.

  • Going to go for a set of black 40mm of varno

  • I'm running non machined rims on my winter fixed - they don't work as well as machined rims but they're good enough to supplement drive train braking. (I'm currently not dead.)
