I have never used all of it, but at the western end, near Reading it is pretty appalling, lots of pavement, unsurfaced tracks and micky mouse bits of path. I cycle to and from London occasionally and just make up a route from Richmond Twickenham, Feltham Ashford Windsor Winkfield Hurst Woodley Reading. There are lots of options and some quite nice roads.

You could use the first half of this route, so long as you can get yourself into town from shinfield -

As adroit said above, I'd avoid the NCN4 esp at this time of year, theres quite a few really rough sections, and it's not direct at all and takes you right round the houses!
Was thinking about cycling over to Reading on the weekend. (if the weather improves!)
Has anyone taken the NCN4 down there and do you know what the surface is like? I'd like to do it on my 'nice' bike but I don't want to be pushing those skinny wheels through gravel/mud etc.
Any advice appreciated.
