Zullo - now nearly a Fixie!!!!

  • Finished!!!!!! FINAL PICS AT BOTTOM ( CHOPPED BARS) -
I bought a Legnano for classic events etc and didn't see the need for two geared road bikes. Back in the dim and distant I used to train only on fixed (Ron Cooper).
This is quite a basic build - I like the idea of the Campag lateral pull tt brake behind front forks
    Spec :-

Deep v rims (as used by Dolan) on Novatech hubs -Vittoria Zaffiros

    Athena Chainset
    Campag Veloce pedals

  • Almost there- it works just need chainline checking and quick release rear skewer and bush is being machined for front brake (works but not as neat as could be)
    What do you think ?

  • I think you really do need that second geared road bike... :) This frame is way too nice to be turned into a fixed gear.

Interesting to see Oria had tubing similar to Columbus max.

  • Just about to say the same thing, tubing lust for sure. I can forgive it being fixed as long as you don't grind anything off.

  • I quite like it as a fixie, but don't get the front brake, why would you do it like that?

  • Thanks for input chaps. Tubing is nice cos it goes oval at head tube (hence fillet brazed there) I Certainly wouldn't grind off anything on the frame - that'd be sacrilege. The brake (which isn't finished yet (as you can see pads not in line) is designed to go behind forks for tt bikes -I just liked the look -no other reason really.

  • front brake cable looks mighty tight?

  • 53-14? That seems a bit excessive for the roads, or do you have legs like Förstemann?

  • Yeah thats going be interesting going uphill or when trying to stop quickly

  • You will destroy your knees on that ratio!

  • Thanks for all the input. The brake cable follows a natural curve (see pic from front) . Re gearing - yes you are right bit steep for road - I've got it like this for rollers. When snow and salt gone will run 16 - 50 max. What gears do you ride on open roads? cheers Si

  • 48-17/16 depending on how I am feeling, 50-16 is still a big city gear, 50-18 would be more like it. 50-16 is what I would ride on the track (actually se 48-15 but its about the same).

  • Hi Loctez - I've put on 42/14 - see how I get on with that.
I've had problems getting the chainline right. Now I've got a smaller chainwheel it can go on the inside of the crank giving me a 42mm front chainline -the back is 40 .Do you think this is within limits?
    Cheers SI

  • that frame is a real beaut

  • Finally done last bits. Brake bush fitted (campag original was for extra large fork hole so did not locate). Bars chopped and flipped ( so much better as no brake hoods to lean on.)
    Finished pics added

  • why is the brake on the back?

  • Hi dakin,
I just saw these Campag time trial brakes and thought they looked cool. Obviously designed for low wind resistance but I just liked the look . Cheers Si

  • awesome! its pretty swish

  • Thanks Dude

  • I agree on mounting brake like you did, cool!
