looks like Athena but not the shifters - more like veloce, or was it stratos?

it's called Velobase

Having a look at ebay, google images and such, they all seem to say this is C-record stuff.
The shifters, rear de and front de have different markings to athena set.

I think you may be right. It looks like an Athena set but can not figure out the shifters. They have the wrong markings for Athena :.

Shifters - have the record pattern on them - ergo 8 speed. I believe they are these...but the shifter doesnt match material/colour but has a very different pattern on the lever itself to athena set.

Have a look at this catalogue: it all looks like 1994 Athena. Velobase is great, but as the content is "user generated", it's not infallible.

The Ergos are a good price...

may be wrong but i think the cranks are chorus not athena.
