Might be good to do a forum ride to Brighton on Mayday?
EDIT: Mayday is on Monday 6th. So a group ride could possibly be done on the Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Since it's a Mayday ride, maybe it's something the forum Clarion group would want to get in on.

I don't think you particularly need to train for London to Brighton.
Each time I have done it there has been a person in the group who hasn't riden a bike for over a decade.
Each time, everyone has made it with a smile on their face. -

6 pints the night before and a bag of chips when you get there is more than ample training

I wanna do it fixed, brakeless at a fair pace then ride back, I've not ridden further than 50 miles in one go ever.

So?
-
• #12
As in do London-Brighton-London, fixed, and brakeless? Now that's just silly.
Doing it fixed with brakes is sensible and would need some training.
-
• #13
I bet he wont ride there and back
-
• #14
So I'd rather do a bit of training so I feel comfortable :)

You have not heard of the legend that is the fifty fourteen.

You don't need training, you just need experience.
Go for a 20-25 miles ride first, see how it feel, don't forget to take tools with you, i.e. if hand start to feel sore, move saddle back a bit, or raise the nose a little more, hips rocking at every pedal strokes, lower saddle a tad etc.
No one need training for the London to Brighton ride, not even my girlfriend who rode it on a 7 speed dutch bike up Ditchling.

Clearly not, has there been someone so mad?

http://www.lfgss.com/thread34433.html
I remember when Object first told me about this nutter who crashed into him and Seb on the Brighton ride on a bike with a 50-14 gear ratio and i remember thinking "What kind of a f*cking nutter rides a 50-14 ratio down those kind of hills?".
Little did we know that incident would name the legend...the great Fiddy fourteen and bring him into the loving arms of the London FGSS community and introduce us all to a man that has made a lasting impression on every person who's had the pleasure of meeting him. -

Well I won't be running 50-14 fo sho.
I'll have taken Ed's advice and gotten a 20t cog and be running 53-20.
As to carrying tools, I always do that :)
Just wondering if the tight clearances on my bike may be a problem. -
• #20
Why would that be a problem?
-
• #21
If I get tired and forget it might be or just get uncomfortable after a while, ah well it'll be fun.
-
• #22
I mean what clearance?
-
• #23
toeverlap
-
• #24
Oh, toe overlap is around 2-3" with cleets in furthest forward position and fork clearance with anything more than a 23c will be pretty much touching at both the top of the fork and the downtube.

Ohh man :( Legend by the sounds of things
Yesterday Jack Thurston (The Bike Show/Resonance fm) posted these two posters on twitter. They are from 1976, advertising the ride that later became the LHF London to Brighton. It seems that it started out as a pro-bike/anti-car thing. Does anybody know more? Was the ride hi-jacked by the BHF? Jack also said he'd love to IV someone who took part back in '76
