Charity bike polo fundraiser.

Posted on
  • Good evening polo world, I've just been invited to be part of a charity fundraiser. The organiser knows of my bike background and has given me a space easily big enough for a couple of courts and space surrounding to put on polo/ bmx/ other bike displays.
Now I've never organising this kind of this so basically I'm after some help and ideas.
There's going to be a big input from the classic car community (mostly vw and lowriders), live music and loads of other stuff, the organisers are going for a festival type feel, there is very likely to be camping too.
The date is set at 10th August and its in a village called exning near Newmarket/ Cambridge.
Cheers for any input, it'll be an awesome day.

  • what's the charity?

  • It's not set in stone yet, the organiser was going to donate all raised to McMillan, but Addenbrookes, the big hospital near us, have the Addenbrookes charitable trust, who are pretty good at supporting people with events like this, so it's likely to be them. And the money will be split up between the charity's supported by them.

  • How much space have you got. What's the surface like?

If you've got enough space for 2-3 courts, and you can get them to put some money towards boards (and get the rest from player fees), you could put on a big tournament. Especially at that time of year, you could get players from all over the place.

  • The surface ain't bad, not amazing. There's space for 2 courts, I'm looking into a mini ramp too, but I seriously doubt they'd get it over the fence, so 2 courts is likely. I was thinking a fairly chilled tourney on just the one court to show off and give people something to watch, and then see if a dozen or so people want to run the second court doing throw-ins, teaching anybody who wants a go. Just gauging interest at this time, and seeing if anybody has any other good ideas to raise some decent money.

  • i think like a one/two court type thing to exhibit polo and whats it about (hopefully get some new people into the game in the area) would be best! theres lighting there too right shane? camping for players would be awesome! can't wait to get this ball rolling!

  • I'm pretty sure few of the Canterbury boys/girl would be up for coming up and playing and lending a hand with stuff.

  • There will be lighting, and being for charity i think it should definitely be aimed at both raising money and a fun tourney to encourage new players. I know its a long old way away, but what kind of money am i looking at for boards for 2 courts (one court will only need 2 sides, the other three)?
