  • I just picked up and built this frame at V-L's house, I am in love with the tight clearances and short TT.
This frame has changed hands on the forum a few times, DoktorP had it first and it looked like this at first with Gazelle track forks. (pics from for sale ad)

He then built it up like this

It was sold to V-L and he built it up a few different ways.
He built it like this for the track

And later like this for le hhsb

I have now built it up as a commuter for the winter with a DiaCompe clamp on brake.
When HH opens up I'll build it as a track bike again but for now this is how it looks.

Front clearances are tight and there's tons of toe overlap but that's what makes track bikes on the road fun :)

Not looking as good as it could but I'm damn happy with it and how it rides!
Apologies for the large and rather shit pics, I'll get better ones tomorrow when there's better light.

Frame-Dave Russell track with 58cm seat tube and 54.5cm top tube (very short)

    Chainring-Alize 53t
    BB-Sugino 75 (???)
    Wheels-Charge dish raw Aluminium
    Tyres-Vittoria Rubino slicks
    Brake-Diacompe clamp on
    Lever-Tektro top lever for CX
    Stem-Sakae 100mm quill

Saddle-Specialized leather one, no idea on model
    Headset-Dura Ace
    Fork-Gazelle track
    Cog-18t

  • looks fucking ace as a track bike

  • It really did!
Hopefully it'll look that good when I get it ready for the track!

  • miss it already!

  • ^^^Pre-empted me, it's best incarnation is the track bike fo sho.

But it is a lovely build you've done, bar the seat and seatpost!

  • Yeah I'll be changing those, turbo saddle and I'm not sure what post yet.

  • Sweeet

I ride a track bike with a track ratio and no brakes every day for my commute, pretty well abused eh?

    yunobreklz?!

  • Wintarulz?

  • I go on and off brakeless I'm gonna do a week on and a week off to give my knees a rest.

  • Went on a ride this morning and when I got home decided to take a couple of pics.

Fuzzy because there's something wrong with my iPhone camera.
Really pleased with how it rides and think I'm now pretty used to the toe overlap.

  • This is how I used to have it build up:

  • That's lovely, I thought I included that pic in the original post but it looks like I forgot to put the last "]" in the name.

  • DoktorP. did you commute on it?

  • ^Not really, I had another frame at the time with longer top tube, and no overlap at all, rode that mainly.
I used it mainly as lighter / quicker / longer distance bike.

  • Ahh that makes sense, I'll be commuting on it and taking it down to HH when it's open again.
    It fits perfectly!

  • Good it fits you, it was to short for me. Still good fun. When Roberts came up both frames were sold, as I ended up with 5 frames in my room.

  • I've currently got 4 in mine but ones being picked up today and another is just temporarily there for a friend.

  • Today I found out that this frame is probably 753 and not 531!

  • Here it is after what I thought would be my last ride on it but it turns out that I may have made it properly rideable again.

  • Fitted BMX pedals and straps today for shorter runs to the shop and just around to use as a beater and I pretty much get pedal overlap now.

  • I thought frame was too light to be 531 but it never had any decals, just the sticker head badge ( which I still have). Forks are stamped Reynolds 531 on the steerer.

So what did you do to make it rideable?

  • What happened to begin with?

  • Well I went over to my Dad's friend's garage today and he felt the frame next to his 531 Bob Jackson and this was far lighter and more hollow and thin sounding.
I did some some digging and remembered this thread.

The only other Dave Russell I've seen with seat stay like this and it also was a TT bike so putting 2 and 2 together I figured they must have been the same model, did request serial but didn't get back to me.

Around a month ago this bike was hit by a car when locked up, I claimed through the insurance to build another.

While in the garage today we were talking about using JB weld on car exhausts and then went on to discuss how it might be possible to temporarily repair my frame with it.

I went home and grabbed the frame, the rear stays were bent and cracked, to repair it properly which I will do one day I'd have to replace the rear triangle so we drilled the crack out a little, made it as straight as we could and filled the hole with JB quick, it feels stiff and will give me something to ride while I complete my new build.

  • Can we have a picture of the damage?
