  • Couldn't pass picking this up. Nice early carbon 1988 AD. Aluminium lugs and carbon tubing.

Not keeping it set up like this though. Triathlon setup has to go for road use and nicer parts. In some genius move Specialized clearcoated the complete frame, lugs included, which resulted in a milky fungus like corrosion on the lugs. Doesn't look pretty but too much of a hassle to fix at this time.

    Plan:
    Frame - No change
Fork - Replace with threadless 1" carbon
    Seatpost - Replace with Carbon
    Wheels - Trispoke front rear
    Groupset - All Campa
Handlebar - Rose Compact (from www.rosebikes.co.uk)
    Stem - Kellly steel 130mm
    Theme - All black components

Stem and handlebars have arrived. Steel tig welded Kelly is incredibly slim, will look great with the frame.

Next up is finding a fork and figuring out the groupset.

  • Bike looks awesome - great paintjob.

If you're selling any of the old components i'd be interested in the seatpost!

  • ^pm'ed

  • The milky fungus is just the oxidation of the alu, it'd be a lot worse if it hadn't been clear coated, any refinishers would be able to sort it

Must say that's a nice looking bike

  • I have one of these from the early 90's. Really nice bikes.

Have since swapped over to compact drop bars and changed the seat.

I have the same, most comfortable bike I have ridden so far.

Unfortunately decided to hang it on the wall and ride a nice contini instead because of fear that the tubes could get lose while me riding the bike.

  • Yeah, I did read some rumours about that too, but couldn't find anything solid on the Specialized website about it. My first few runs out were nervous affairs..
It has seen me through 2,300 miles so far this year - I really should put it away for the winter but need to get something else sorted first.

Carabo - I tried a carbon fork on mine and took it off again pretty quickly as it looked all wrong. Will be interested to see how yours turns out.

  • sell that seatpost to scoble

  • Nice bike HMS, good to hear it's holding up well. I'm not worried about the oxidation but the fact that it's glued will stay in the back of my head a little.

In the mean time I've found a used Time fork, which I'll be picking up next week. From the pictures it doesn't look too fat but final judgement will be done with it put into the frame. With the ahead stem and trispoke I'm hoping it'll look balanced.

  • Thanks - I don't pretend to be any kind of an expert about these things but the frame seems very rigid. I often forget it is a carbon bike at all. Particularly one which is basically held together with superglue. To me it just feels light and stiff. The forks however are another kettle of fish and they are juddery around even the smoothest of corners. Maybe a straight carbon set would look ok but the curved ones didn't IMO. I don't ride far or fast enough for it to matter so keeping the originals was an easy decision.

  • Time for an update, been slowly collecting more parts for the build. Trying to keep things withing a reasonable budget so I mostly bought used parts. Going with Campa 10 speed, makes it easier to swap parts with my main rig and most parts are available in all black.

Came out of a very big frame by the looks of it. PRO headset included in the deal.

    Campagnolo Veloce brakes

    Great value

    Campagnolo Mirage crankset 50/34

Got a good deal on these, only lightly used. Will swap the chainrings for a 52/36 pair.

    Campagnolo Record BB

    EPS compatible appartently.

    Campagnolo Record 10sp ergopowers

Well used but in good working order. Specifically wanted an Ultra Shift model cause they can do multiple shifts with one lever throw.

    Tape and QR's

    All black.

Next up; disassembly of bicycle followed by assembly with new parts!

  • New chainrings are in!

    Miche crono 52t + 36t

Beyond the functional scope of this bicycle, so just because it'll look nice. :)

  • That ring is going to look ace, gotta see some full bike pictures soon

  • Lovely looking frame, seen a good few built up nice, look forward to finished article!

  • Will be interested to see how this builds up. I am going to be building a Casati Ellisse Due, made from columbus Neuron from a similar era as your Allez. Building it with with modern kit as my road bike and fair weather commuter. Probably looking at similar gearing and second hand but good condition kit like yourself. It is my first road bike in a few years and not decided whether to go with Campy, shimano or sram yet.

  • Oh I saw that frame in classifieds, very classy. Looking forward to the build.

Spent the better part of yesterday building the bike. It's coming together nicely, pretty much looks as I had in mind. Not sure yet if I'll remove the logos from the fork or not, they distract a little from the frame graphics (they're under the clearcoat so I'd be sanding them off).

Still have some drivetrain parts on order. Build will continue when those are in.

  • Amazing.

  • wowowowow! Double tri spoke ftw. Could do with a flite to match the yellow graphics though...

EDIT - Also where did you get those chain rings? Can't find them anywhere.

  • Gorgeous, I thought that huge stem might look a bit off but no. Great job!

  • Thanks, yeah I did consider a black Flite actually but decided to use this slr I already had to save some money. I might get black a Max Flite if I see one for a reasonable price.

The chainrings I got from this ebay shop, seller is away till the 12th of January though.

Just taken one off my bike, changed on the advice of a bike fitter. Only done about 1000 miles. Say £40? PM me if you're interested.

Ace build BTW, love that stem.

  • Thanks for the offer but the model I'm looking for is one generation older. Like this one: http://cycleangelo.cc/image/729647175 v

  • Cool, no worries, thought it was an odd choice! Good luck finding the one you're after. :)

  • Tenderloin has one.

I could be interested in you SLR if you don't need it.
