wobbling wheel, rear spacing and wheel problem

Posted on
  • This morning when I got to work I was noticing my rear wheel was wobbling side to side on the axel, so took it into lmnh, cost me 6 quid to “tighten” this, and was told that because my track wheel on a road (steel frame I cold set to the right dimension) causing the cone to undo itself, is there anyway I can prevent this from happening again?

Also is it just me or anyone else has so many problems with their bike!

  • Could you space out the hub a little? If the dropout is the right width, I can't see whether it's track or horizontal should matter.

  • how do i space the hub?

  • with a spacer

  • thing is the drop outs are almost exactly the same spacing as the hub, so spacing the hub would force the dropouts to open up again no?

  • on re-reading the op, how is the cone coming undone? and now that it has been re-tightened has it come undone again? u must make sure all the nuts and washers and spacers on the axle are tight when the wheel is bolted up. if there is any gap that may allow the cone to undo, but it has to have some 'air' to undo into.

spacing the hub will only help the CL and would have no effect on the cones undoing. If LMNH has done it up correctly and the frame is tight to the Axle and there is no dead air between any of the other components then you should not have a repeat of this.

  • im not entirely sure, he just took the wheel and went into the back, i dont suppose he did anything else except tightening it

  • weeeeel the distance between the cones and the bearings is crucial. as you will find from this handy article from the GOD of bikeyshit.

  • i guess i will check if it ever come loose again, finger cross it doesnt! i did read abt it having being just the right distance, but theres nth much i cld do without cone wrench and stuff...

  • the joy of tools!
