The chainstay bridge (is that the right term) looks like it is only fixed to one of the chain stays - or am I looking at the pictures wrong?

That is correct. It's meant to be like that, though. I'm not 100% sure what that bit's for - it's not in a useful place for cable routing. Possibly a mudguard mount? There's a hole through it for something to attach. Maybe use it to keep a spare Tic Tac? Maybe not. Definitely not.

Okay right so. It's called a fender and it's to attach the end of a mudguard to, like so:

That's why it doesn't need to bridge the chainstays - it's non-structural.
Hey there. Here's some things for you. I'll donate some dollar to the forum when and if these go (photo sets link toward the end):
Raleigh M-Trax 7000: Nice frame this. 58cm x 58cm. Reynolds 531 tubing. I've an aluminium seatpost I'll throw in for free if needed. Comes with headset fitted. There's a bit of wear but it's purely cosmetic. Would make a quality beater/winter bike fixed or geared. With a new paint job could be really smart. I should probably have cleaned it before taking these photos, it will clean up nice...
£100 it's a champagne lifestyle for beer money
Universal Super Tracker BMX: There's a lovely matching rear caliper and lever to go with it (not pictured but comes with). I cleaned and re-greased the bb. All in good order.
£60 it's a classic
Mongoose BMX: All working. A bit of surface rust here and there and paint worn around the headtube but would generally scrub up nice. The front brake cable is routed through the steerer which means you could turn the handle bars all the way round, should you be so inclined. Also pegs can be attached.
£75 it's bomb proof
Because I'm really nice I'll deliver (ride with M-Trax on me back and just ride the beamers) any of these for free, pretty much at your convenience, pretty much anywhere within non piss-taking distance of Stoke Newington. Any where with a London postcode, basically. Bargain.
Here are photo sets of them all:

Oh yeah I've also got a Miditech Midistart 2 midi keyboard which I haven't made any use of. It looks like this:
