Loose Ahead set

Posted on
  • I've had a steerer tube cut down & integral Ahead set fitted at a LBS.
It's slightly loose and the Mechanic said it will bed in, is this right?
Also, I have no spacers between the Stem and headset: it's flush.
Could this be why it's loose?
    Was this a bad idea?
    TIA

  • This definitely doesn't sound right. There should be no play. "Bedding in" usually means getting looser, not tighter.

Remove the top cap from the stem with a hex-key. Look inside. The very top of the fork steerer should be a couple of millimetres below the top edge of the handlebar stem. If it is flush, then there's no way of adjusting the tension on the bearing, so you'd need to add a narrow spacer. Then you can adjust the bearing in the normal way

  • Thanks, it is indeed flush!
I think he's f_cked up cutting it down!
    New Forks?

  • No, just add a 5mm spacer or something, as suggested by vikingfixed. You want to create a gap similar to this picture (you can get away with a few mm more (between top of steerer and top of stem)). Set it up, give it a few rides, then you'll probably find you need to readjust by about a quarter turn of the adjusting bolt once it's bedded in.

  • Yes, that picture illustrates it perfectly. Your LBS mechanic has simply not cut enough off the fork steerer/neglected to add a stem spacer. Either of which would solve your problem. No new forks required. Phew!

  • Thanks for all the advice, as I suspected it's the absence of any spacers.

  • Mechanic seems a bit shit.
