cranks threaded, stuck on the bike

Posted on
  • so, I used a crappy BB tool, I stripped the threads of my NDS crank and now can't take in out, I managed to take the DS crank but can't access the left BB cup to take it out
    I tried:
supergluing the tool into the stripped thread, not enough resistance
    hamering the damn thing off
    leverage against the BB shell
Hammering the axle via a crankbolt
and sometimes all of this at once

Question: do I need to take the hacksaw out or have I got another option which would save me half a day of pain?

Oh yeah I've also done a 1000miles since this "incident" and the BB is shot so I HAVE to replace it.

  • Can't remember what the tool is called but we've got one at work, it's like a fork but each prong is a wedge, you put it either side of the taper and hammer it in, pushes the crank right off.

  • yes perfect, now do you work in Paris... good idea for me though, I'll look around.

  • Unfortunately I'm in Manchester, but if you can get a 'Ball joint separator', which is the tool I was on about. (Just remembered) from an auto shop or mechanic, that should do the trick.

  • i would recommend you to buy yourself 6 inch puller, just google it, either 2 leg version or 3 leg version which can be transformed to 2 legged version(it has 4 fitments). it costs about 15 pounds and its worth buying

  • or get a hammer and gently bash the threads of the crank over the bolt
(this sort of assumes you are going to buy a new crank)
If you peen (the technical term) the threads over the bolt enough simply unscrewing the bolt will pull the crank off

  • yup new cranks/BB are waiting, good idea too, thanks.

  • Bit of heat n a hammer, if you're careful
    Spot weld tool to crank
    Flywheel puller
Few options, if you love your frame, old, sentimental, pristine etc I'd go straight for the hacksaw/dremel doesn't take long

  • http://www.lfgss.com/post2629353-6.html might be a possibility.

  • yes, good find

  • Crank bolt out, ride around.

Crank will be off in 5 minutes.

Probably less if it's fixed and you can apply pressure in both directions ie do a skid.

  • Badaboom tish, mindblown, I feel rather dumb now.
Moth: to add to this technique, no need to screw the cup halfway, I think a stem spacer would do the trick and be safer for the frame.

  • the tool of choice for all your cycling problems
