• Picked this up the other day from a local man. He told me it was a 531 frame from a local builder up in Leicester called "Barry Bond" which he resprayed himself. It's got a mix of components on and the forks have been replaced:

    Dura-ace crankset and derailleurs
    600 Headset
Dura ace hubs on 27" mavic module E rims
    Weinmann brakes

The front fork seems to be slightly too long for the drop of the brakes, even with the blocks right at the bottom (I don't know how the previous owner actually stopped the bike with the brakes like this!) so I think I might put a set of modern long drop brakes on there - maybe some of those Tektro ones? Do I need new levers too?

I want to convert it to a SS/fixed with a new rear wheel for use at uni and maybe some weekend rides. I want to make the move to 700c but I'm not sure what I should do with the original wheels - are they worth anything?

So what do you guys think - what needs changing and what should I keep?

  • If you're planning on swapping to ss/fixed I'll take the cranks, derailleurs and dt shifters off ya!

  • if you go SS, and the rear has a screw on hub then just keep the wheels, if you replace them with 700c you may have to get new callipers with a longer reach etc, tyres are fairly readily available for 27s, so no serious reason for swapping imho.

I'd ride it as is really, perhaps keep adding the missing dura ace bits and you'll have a nice groupset on a nice roadbike, perfect for both uni commute and the longer ride..

  • Give it to me to go with my near original Sid Mottram?

  • I have to replace the front brake anyway because with the aftermarket fork the previous owner put on the brakes don't actually reach the 27" rim! I think I might keep it as is (with new brakes, bar tape and maybe tyres) for the time being. If I switch to 700c is pedal clearance an issue? The current cranks look like they might be long enough to hit the ground.

  • if it isn't broke, why try and fix it? gears work, they make you go fast. putting 700c wheels on a bike that should take 27" wheels look a little rubbish......sort out the front brake and ride it.....but what do i know.....

It looks pretty ace as it is. Brakes, tape and a service and it's tip top. Turning it into a conversion that'll never be as good as it is now just seems silly to me.

  • Maybe some clip on cable stops for the top tube would look nicer than the tape on there at the mo.

  • Right guys, you've convinced me. The wheels need truing so I'll have to sort that out with the brakes. Cosmetically speaking it needs tape and maybe a different saddle (it didn't come with one so I just put a spare one on) Maybe leather tape to go with the hoods?
