Campagnolo cables

  • Trying to fit the brake cables

The kit has come with 2 lengths of slightly fatter cable outers which can only be for the brakes, and these 5 ferrules

The ferrules won't go over the brake outers

    What am I doing wrong?

  • You haz either ferrules for gear cables or thinner brake cable outers. Try again.

  • it's really pissing me off now

I have left off the ferrules for the brake cables

Now I am trying to fit the rear derailleur cable

the little bit of outer between the derailleur and lug on the frame won't fit into the lug, nor will that funny narrowed ferrule :(

  • Is it definitely a gear cable? It should be braided not wound if so.

The Campag brakes I've come across don't use ferrules, hence why you didn't get any ferrules for the brake cable.

The "funny" narrow ferrule is for older style of cable hangers that are simply a little metal ring - the thin section goes through the ring. Otherwise the inside of those "lugs" can be covered with paint (was the frame painted recently?) or oxidation. Try scrape it off with a small screwdriver.

  • The funny narrowed or stepped ferrule (far right) should be for rear mech to stop on the chainstay for older bikes. There might be a few different sizes though, or if your frame has been painted, powder coated or chromed the coating could be reducing the size of the opening in the cable stop.

Given the image you posted I'd say you has gear ferrules and brake outer cable.

When fitting the brake outer the only place you should really need to use ferrules* would be where the outer cables stops at the cable guide on the front of the top-tube and then where it starts again at the cable guide at the rear of the top tube. Many calipers won't accept ferrules so don't worry about that.

*This is presuming you are using aero (ie under the tape) brake cable routing. If you are using older levers with non aero routing you might want to fit a ferrule on the lever end of the brake outer.

If you cannot get a ferrule to fit the rear mech cable stop you can just use a standard ferrule, forget about fitting it into the stop, just butt it up against and secure the outer cable to the chainstay behind the stop with a ziptie or tape.

  • cheers, I ended up greasing that ferrule and it took a bit of pressure but it went in

    Ran the brakes without ferrules

  • nice benotto dude, join the club!
