• A boy a girl and a bike HBFS October show 8th October
Featuring some beautiful shots of cycling along the hills and dales of Yorkshire, this film came as a pleasant surprise. Suggested by Jack Thurston of the Resonance FM’s the Bike Show http://thebikeshow.net/ I have to admit to a bit of an inner sneer when he suggested it. Diana Dors bicycles? Well I am pleased to say running a bicycle film society brings lots of unexpected pleasures and this is one. Made in 1949 this film captures a time when cars did not dominate every aspect of our outdoor lives, when bicycle clubs were everywhere and normal and those clubs were not just about bicycles but also support networks. Something I had hoped to create with this film society.
The film stars many actors who were either already British stars or were to become so with Honor Blackman leading and Diana Dors perfecting the vamp character she played so well. Also with Anthony Newley who played the Artful Dodger in David Leans Oliver Twist, Megs Jenkins and a younger Thora Hird. The film also has stunning locations including Grassington, Skipton and Bolton Abbey!

For shorts this month we also have an extremely rare and fascinating Granada TV documentary from 1980 the Knife Grinders Tale which follows a year in the life of a Knife Grinder who worked his way across Britain on a bicycle fully equipped to sharpen knives and living in a Bothy even through the winter.

Last month I predicted the film society might close I am glad to say this will not happen and we will continue with our programme. However we do need volunteers for the following roles

Setters up and down – Which involves arriving about 6:30 on a show night and helping put up the screen, rearranging the room, putting together the sound and projector and also at the end of the show packing away again this does not need to be the same person as long as we have enough to cover so I do not have to do it by myself.
Shorts finders - This involves scouring the internet for shorts contacting their owners to find if is OK to show the films and then collating them.

Film boffs or otherwise - To decide next year’s films

Membership Secretary - To keep track of our 200 odd members

Development people - Since its inception the film society has developed first just showing a feature film then adding shorts at the beginning, then doing talks for next year it would be good to use the film society as a base to make links with other cycling groups and perhaps link shows with bike rides, festivals, sport and games.

  • Found the film we are showing as a short this month A Tinkers Tale all about a bloke who spent 35 years on the road peddling his knife grinding on a fully equipped bike cycling from one town to the next. Of course it was at the bottom of all my stuff.
